A dancer AU because the best way to cope with what is stressing you out is to write it into a oneshot
It was a late Wednesday night, and it would be an understatement to say that Kirstie was in a bad state of mind. The company she danced for was looking at a triple header show that upcoming weekend, and their performances were nowhere near where they needed to be, performance quality wise. On top of that stress, she just failed a test in math, and was looking at a year long lecture from her mom about that when she got back from rehearsals. Not to even mention that she had forgotten to eat that whole day. She just wasn't in the right frame of mind.
Their studio director, Katherine, was kind enough to give Kirstie, her pas partner, Avi, and their friends, Nicole and Scott, a half hour break while other rehearsals were going on. On that thirty minute, Kirstie was leaning against the wall, listening to Scott tell a story about some kid who got expelled from his school or something like that, she wasn't really focusing.
Kirstie finally snapped back into reality when she felt her whole right leg go numb, something that tends to happen when she wouldn't eat for a whole day or two on end. She caught herself before she hit the floor, but right as she fell, Avi turned around. "Oh my gosh, Kirstie!" Avi exclaimed and went over to her.
"I'm fine, I'm sorry." Kirstie looked up from the ground and saw Avi with panic washed over his face, and Nicole and Scott in the background, about ready to call an ambulance or something. A minute later, Nicole and Scott get called back for rehearsal on their own, and Avi speaks up.
"We're having a talk." He said quite calmly, seeing that just by looking at him, he was still freaking out. Kirstie sighed loudly, but sat down anyway, preparing herself for a lecture. Avi closed the door and sat across from her. "We're going to talk about this rationally."
"Okay, Avi."
"Okay," Avi took a deep breath. "Before we start, did you hear the new a Capella cover of Havana yet?" He did this strategically, he knew if he got Kirstie talking about something she loved for a bit before going in with all the concerning talk, that she'd be less likely to panic.
"I did." She smiled, she loved music, bled her favorite lyrics basically. This talk went on for a while. They talked about music, New York, flowers (Kirstie loved flowers), poetry, anything that made her happy.
Avi took another breath, and he started the real conversation. "Did you eat anything today?" Kirstie looked to the floor, she knew how he felt about her little tangents like this. Another minute passed, and from her silence, Avi concluded she hadn't slept in a while, nor drank any water. "Kirst--" He began again, but was interrupted.
Kirstie just started to vent about everything. Her failed test, how there is way too much riding on these shows, how her mom was going to kill her because of that test, how she was just too distracted to remember to eat, how nightmares from all the stress had been keeping her up all night, all of it. And Avi just listened, that's the big thing, he listened to her, because he knew she needed that.
"Breathe, Darling. Stop. Come here, you're crying." Kirstie didn't even know she was crying. Avi stood up and hugged her, but Kirstie fought against him and ran from the back room. "Kirstin!" He shouted to her. "Come here, you're okay, you're safe." Against her own will, Avi picked her up bridal style and brought her back to the back room where breaks are taken. She just stood there, sobbing against his shoulder.
Kirstie flinched as the back room door opened to reveal Nicole, just a moment later. "Katherine wants you two in there." At this, Avi told Nicole to stay with Kirstie and hug her. Classic Avi, making sure Kirstie doesn't turn in on herself. He came back a minute later, out of breath from all the running from studio to the back he just did. "Nicole and Scott are done, Scott's going to take us home. Katherine said it was perfectly fine."
"Avi!" Kirstie shouted, working herself up more than she already had. "You can't make me skip, there's too much riding on this, and--" She stopped when she got almost too lightheaded to stand.
"Nikkie, go get Katherine." Avi said to Nicole, and she went off to get their director. That made Kirstie even more frustrated than she already was.
When Katherine got back and saw the state Kirstie was in, she went full on overprotective too, lecturing Kirstie about how she obviously was in the wrong state of mind to be dancing, and how if she wants the most from her rehearsals, then taking one night off is going to make it a million times better. Katherine went back to her rehearsals to direct, and Kirstie still kept arguing with Avi, trying to get him to let them stay.
"Oh my actual gosh!" Avi shouted and slammed his hand against the wall to get her to shut up. "You're scaring me, okay? These tangents you go on scare me! I don't want this to be happening to you, okay? Take a break, you're going to die. And I don't want you to die, we need a Queen of Hearts for this ballet.” Kirstie nodded. She was still panicky, so Avi took her into a hug that probably was crushing her bones. He knew that get her to stop panicking.
After a while of just standing there, Nicole tapped Avi's shoulder and let him know Scott had his car running to take them home.
“Ready?” Avi asked, and Kirstie nodded. She dried her eyes as best she could and started out the door, having to pass through the studio lobby to get to Scott’s car.
As they passed through lobby, James had to tell one of the little dancers that Kirstie teaches ballet to that, “Miss. Kirstie was okay.” Those kids are sweet as pie.
Avi and Kirstie shuffled into Scott's car, in the back, and Avi wrapped an arm around Kirstie's waist, feeling that she was still shaking. He kissed the side of her head, and lead her to lay on his shoulder. In what felt like half a second, Kirstie was asleep on his shoulder, and for once that whole Wednesday night, the both of them could breathe.
