Chapter 37: Work without Lucy

Natsu P.O.V
Thursday Feb 28th

I was late coming into school. I had already texted Lucy to tell her that I'd be late and she would go on ahead. I had to take care of something before coming to school, just a quick call nothing special.

I had already missed first period so I entered the deadly quiet school. I got given a late slip to fill out and I filled it out accordingly.

"Please endeavour to make it to school on time Mr. Dragneel, we don't want you um never mind just make it to school on time" The person who gave me the slip said.

"Sure" I mumbled annoyed.

Annoyed not mad.

I walked towards my locker trying to erase that annoyed feeling as it might evolve to something else. I opened my locker putting my bag in, grabbing my books before closing it again. I entered the classroom halfway through a lesson. The teacher looked annoyed to be disrupted but grabbed my slip and instructed me to sir down.

What that lady had said had set me off and I needed to find a way to calm myself down. I looked towards Lucy not realizing Yukino was watching me with a smirk on her face. She seemed to not really care about the lesson. On the other hand, I needed to pay attention as this was Biology.

But something about Lucy didn't let me look away. I hadn't realized I had spent the whole class staring at Lucy before the bell rang. I quickly snapped out of my trance brushing off that strange feeling. I walked out of the classroom. Lucy was waiting for me outside.

"You looked mad when you came in" Lucy shouted over the noise of the people in the hallway.

"The person that gives us the late slips said something that made me annoyed not mad" I told her still shouting.

"Thanks for disrupting by the way, I was about to fall asleep" Lucy informed me.

We had reached the class and sat down. We'd probably talk more during Lunch. I tried hard to listen to this teacher. Finals were less than 4 months so I should start preparing. Time moved slowly as the teacher taught us. Eventually the bell rang signifying the start of lunch and I couldn't be happier.

I stood up calmly not drawing attention to myself while waiting for Lucy to finish, we both exited the room quietly.

"Mind explaining why you were late in the first place?" Lucy asked as we reached her locker.

"I had a really important call I forgot to do last night so I did it this morning, it lasted longer than I thought it would" I answered.

Lucy simply nodded and grabbed her lunch, closing her locker. We reached my locker and talked more as I grabbed my lunch. We headed for the library.

"I noticed something while in Biology class" Lucy started.

"What was it?" I asked interrupting her.

"You were staring at me the whole time" Lucy finished smirking.

"Well um how do I explain this?" I asked.

Lucy smiled at me obviously enjoying that I was struggling.

"I couldn't take my eyes off you" I said after finding my answer.

Lucy looked at me a little shocked before returning her expression back to normal.

"Stop flirting and tell me the truth" Lucy said in a jokingly commanding tone.

"I am telling the truth though" I said.

Lucy flicked my forehead.

"I don't believe you" She told me. "It's fine if you don't want to tell me though"

"But I'm telling the truth" I muttered under my breath.

We reached the library and sat down talking like normal.

"Hey Natsu, I forgot to ask you this but when is your birthday?" Lucy asked out of curiosity.

"June 21st, that's why I'm named Natsu which means summer because I was born at the beginning of summer" I answered.

"I didn't realize your name meant summer" Lucy said.

"Not many people realize it, it's fine" I told her. "Since I'm born on June 21st I'm older than you"

"By 9 to 10 days" Lucy complained.

"You shall now address me as Natsu the wiser and older" I joked.

"And you shall remember that I'm your master and I don't approve of that" Lucy said pulling out her Trump card.

"Way to ruin my fun Lucy" I complained.

A smile came across Lucy's face as she heard that. For some reason seeing her smile made me happier. Being best friends with her was one of the best decisions of my life. The lunch bell rang a while after that and we packed up our lunches. We walked towards our lockers, grabbing my books and putting my lunch into my locker. I met up with Lucy in class as we both sat down.

The rest of the day couldn't go any faster. We had Math last period so I was enjoying myself while Lucy was suffering. I hadn't even realized it was the end of the day until the bell rang. I grabbed all my belongings and headed towards my locker feeling tired. I had put all of it into my locker and grabbed my bag. I went outside to find Lucy waiting for me.

We stopped off at my house to pick up Happy before heading to Lucy's house. She opened the door and I felt a rush of warm air. Plue bounded towards us. He had grown a little. I set Happy down to play with Plue. They had become good friends in no time. I groaned loudly. Lucy looked to me.

"I have work and you don't, it's going to be boring" I complained.

Natsu didn't miss the small smile that came unto Lucy's face.

"Well then you have to go" Lucy said trying to hide the smile.

"You're enjoying the fact that I'll be bored without you" I guessed.

"I don't know what you're talking about, now if you don't eat, you won't be able to eat until you get home" Lucy said.

I sat down eating the perfectly made ramen with Lucy. We talked a little more until I had to leave for work. The walk there was lonely, it didn't feel nice. I had to walk like this every single Thursday, you'd think I'd be used to it but I'm not.

I entered the restaurant and quickly changed before going to serve customers. Lisanna came up to me smiling.

"So how are you doing without Lucy here?" She asked.

"It's boring" I answered.

I saw her smile.

"So you miss Lucy being here?" She questioned.

"Yeah" I answered.

"You guys are adorable, I actually believe you're dating in secret" Lisanna gushed.

"We're not" I told her, going back to serving customers.

Work was boring without Lucy here. Maybe we can ask Mr. Macao to adjust our days off. Maybe that would work. I'm going to try that.

Sorry for not updating. I was A little busy with tests. 4 tests in a week. But I blame my own laziness for not updating yesterday when I had free time.
