Chapter 64: Eye contact

Wednesday June 2nd

Natsu has been acting stranger than usual if you call it that. It's been happening since he went to Mira's house while I went to dinner with my oh so lovely aunt and uncle. Mira probably told him something that's making him act this way. I could probably ask Mira myself but sometimes it's better to stay ignorant.

Natsu snapped his fingers in front of my face. I had zoned out during lunch.  They were all looking at me weirdly. Natsu seemed not to be avoiding eye contact which is rare now.

"Sorry. Did I say something?" I asked.

"You said oh so lovely aunt and uncle." Yukino answered.

"Don't worry about it. I mutter things that just come to mind randomly." I told them.

"Oh okay." Yukino said.

They continued talking while I watched. I was more focused on Natsu. He was talking to Yukino and Sting normally so I shouldn't be any different. This boy is driving me crazy. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Lunch ended and we went to our lockers. Natsu avoided eye contact with me completely before leaving to his own locker. So I'm not imagining it.

We went to class and the rest of the day continued. Natsu would talk to me while pretending to do something so he wouldn't look at me. This much was making me madder by the minute. I was going to confront him about it once we got home. The bell finally rang for the end of the day and I went to my locker.

I grabbed my books and headed outside waiting for him. He sure took his sweet time. I waited for 30 minutes before he came out.

"Took you a while to come out." I told him.

"Sorry." He apologized.

We began to walk to the house. We reached there slower than I thought. Probably because of the awkward silence. We entered the house and I found a note on the counter. Next week on Thursday. They want to have another talk.

"What's that?" Natsu asked.

"Just a note from my aunt and uncle." I answered and shoved it in my pocket.

Natsu headed for the living room and sat down. I followed behind. I was about to say something before he asked.

"What kind of people are your aunt and uncle?" He asked.

I took a seat beside him.

"Normal people. They live abroad. This house is under their name. That's why I can live alone here even if I'm 16." I said coldly.

"Do you get along with them?" He asked.

"Huh?" I asked.

"Your tone just sounded cold is all." He told me.

"It's rocky but somehow stable. We get along okay I guess." I answered his question.

"That sounds nice." He said.

Happy and Plue were watching us as if sensing the tension. They both looked to me and I sighed.

"What is it?" I asked.

"What?" He asked back.

"What's the problem?" I asked.

"I don't know what you're talking about." He answered.

"Then explain what's been going on. Why do you continue avoiding eye contact with me?" I asked.

"I'm not-" He started.

"Don't lie to me. You can't even look me in the eye right now." I snapped.

He looked at me in surprise before looking away.

"Exactly like that. This has been the last two days." I continued in a louder volume than my normal voice.

"Sorry." He apologized.

"I just need an explanation." I said in a calmer voice.

"I don't really have one." He answered. "I'm doing it without a reason."

"Did Mira say something weird?" I asked.

His face was turning redder by the second.

"She didn't say anything like that." He answered.

"Then look at me." I said, my voice accidentally cracking.

Natsu looked at me in surprise.

"That was an accident. Don't mind it."I said quickly.

His face seemed to light up. He gave me a hug.

"Don't cry Lucy." He said.

"I'm not crying!" I shouted.

"I'm right here. Don't worry." He teased.

"I know you're smiling Natsu. This isn't a joke!" I exclaimed.

"I'm not joking." He said, trying to hold in his laughter.

I sighed. He pulled away from the hug, removing my warmth source. I frowned a little before smiling. He looked me full in the face and gave me a smile. Atleast he's back to normal.

He proceeded to use my lap as a pillow. He seems fine. Mira must have something that opened his eyes.

"Hey Natsu?" I asked.

"Yeah?"

I put my face closer and closer to his face and his face became redder and redder.

"Do you have any relatives?" I asked.

His face turned darker.

"I have one uncle." He answered, his tone cold.

"You don't get along with him?" I asked.

"No. No I don't." He answered. "I'm sorry but can we please not talk about him? I'm getting irritated." 

"I don't mind." I said.

"I'm going to sleep okay? Can you wake me up when we have work?" He asked.

"Didn't sleep well?" I asked.

"Yep." He answered.

He fell asleep quickly and I stayed where I was. I'm greatful that he fell asleep. I nearly blushed in front of him. I just hope he can't hear my heartbeat from here.

Seriously Natsu, the sooner you realize. The sooner I don't have to hide. You have the power to open the door. Just get it over with so I can sleep peacefully.

I don't have a good feeling about summer and I don't know why.

It's been a week. I'm starting school soon. T-T. I don't want to go back. School is too hard.
