Ignorance is Bliss

"You want some?" Elli asked without looking up from flipping the pancakes. I shrugged as I walked over and into the kitchen, leaning against the counter staring at the sizzling sausages I hadn't noticed. "Yeah, did you make enough?". "uhm" she nodded, glancing at me briefly then back to the food then back at me taking a step back. "Char! Why is your ear bleeding?" She was hiding her concern with an exaggerated face of worry. I lifted my hand to my ear. There was something crumby that coated my ear. Dried blood. When did I bleed? the question bearly crossed my mind before I remembered the shattered plastic from the old bowling sign. "AH!" I yelled pointing at Elli. "The wind blew the old bowling sign down and the plastic broke and cut my ear-" I became less confident as I went with Elli's face of utter disbelief and annoyance.  "I think..." I finished off. Turning from her I quickly went to the kitchen sink to clean my ear off. "uhuh," she mumbled back, not believing me.

After breakfast, I got a call from work to come in early because they were short some workers. I shrugged it off and decided I could work, at least that would be a productive way to spend the Saturday. After hanging up I ran up the stairs and into my parents' room, knowing mom would probably be chilling up there on her iPad. Opening the door she looked up at me, her mouth full of chips. "Could you drive me to work in a couple minutes?" she dropped her hand to the bed and rolled her eyes which were now wide. "Yeah, I guess." noticing her exhausted voice I bowed as I backed out of the room. "Oh, great mother I bow at your benevolence..."

For some reason, I was more spacy than normal at work today. I kept forgetting what I was doing and staring into space, or at coworkers, trying to remember something. Finally getting pulled aside and chewed out by my boss I stopped zoning out as much. But I still did. This time I found myself staring at the raggedy blue ribbon on my wrist and kept thinking it was different in some way. The color maybe? The material? Hearing the doorbell rings a customer entered I jumped back into action taking their order. After that, it suddenly got really busy and I no longer had any time to waste or spend zoning out.

It was almost 5 o'clock when Marlo, the manager, told me I could call my ride. I was able to clock almost 6 hours, more than my usual 3. Grabbing the phone usually used to make orders I dialed the home phone, remembering only the pattern the numbers made on the keyboard rather than the numbers themselves. Someone picked up.

"Hello?" I felt a twist of guilt and pity. It was Cyrus.

"Hey Cy, is mom or dad there?" I asked casually, trying to convince myself it wasn't my fault.

"Sure one second," he said into the phone then yelled "MOOOOM!!" forgetting to move the phone away from his mouth. I went deaf for a second but recovered before mom got on the phone. "Hello?" she was speaking in her phone voice, "Hey mom, can you pick me up?" I asked apologetically, "Oooh, it's not dark out yet, can't you just walk home? I'm in the middle of making dinner..." She had dropped the phone voice, now speaking normally. I sighed. "Ok, but I won't be back for awhile." "That's ok! Don't get kidnapped or murdered! Bye!" She rapid fired, hanging up before I could even say bye. Hanging up the phone I leaned against the counter for a moment. Something was still bothering me as I finally clocked out. Changing out of my uniform and stuffing it into my backpack, I was wearing jeans with my knock-off timberlands. About to make the long walk home.

"Wait, on your way out take the trash with you." Marlo,  stopped me pointing at the trash bin near Kelly who was busy with something, feeling a little annoyed I answered with a small grin "That's not a very nice thing to say about Kelly."

"CHARLIE!" Kelly and Marlo both yelled at me, one mad and one laughing. (You be the judge)

Hauling the trash out to the side of the restaurant, I began to zone out. The wind was harsh but not as harsh as it had been yesterday. Yesterday. What happened? I felt a strange fog over my mind when I tried to remember. Shaking my head I snapped out of it in time to stop myself from swinging my backpack into the trash bin. Chuckling, I swung the actual trash bag over and into the container. Hopefully no one saw that- The wind suddenly let out a howl that sent the grin clean off my face and a shiver down my spine. My knuckles turned white as I gripped the strap of my backpack. Fear. A rush of adrenaline. What was it? I heard another howl that almost made my heart stop.

The wolves.

I remembered.
