"What, what's wrong?" I asked again at Minnie's shaken expression illuminated by the orange street lights. The colors of the portal were still flashing, as the sounds mixed into the wind. We were on a wide sidewalk that traced along an apartment complex. Glancing over at one of the large windows that lined the first floor, I felt a knot in my throat. I saw myself staring back at me but behind my reflection, I saw no lights.
Alarmed I looked back at the still hollowing portal.
Minnie suddenly grabbed at my arm. I jumped back from her, but she kept her grip.
"I was wrong. Let's go back."
It took me a moment to realize she meant my house rather than her world. Nodding, we started back. Her grip on my arm tightening.
Tripping on my steps with her right behind me, I glanced back at her and decided just to go on. Her eyes looked eerily empty, the grayness making her look almost dead.

The seventeen-year-old boy's short white hair reflected the flickering torchlight as he stood waiting for his sister. There was no reason for her to come. Yet he waited.
A whole hour had almost passed when Soul heard the howls. His fingers closed tightly over the ring, as his breathing became anxious. Facing the direction of the hounds, a scornful smile slowly grew on his face.
She had to come.
***
Mira had taken only a couple of steps away from the whirlwind before catching the sound of the boy running off. She gritted her teeth as a dark form tried to catch her off guard as she looked towards Mage. Swerving away, she made a break for the torchlight.
She couldn't do anything. Not yet.
Sliding on some wet leaves she stopped in front of her brother, hand out as she swallowed her pride.
"Give it back!"
Soul took a step back and gave a slight scoff, handing her the ring.
"You make it sound like I stole it from you,"
She slipt the ring on and turned on her heels, but Soul grabbed the back of her collar.
"Hey, where are you going?"
He hissed as Mira tripped backward. A loud crash of wind sounded through the air. Catching herself, but not yet free from his grip she twisted around to face him angrily.
"You want him to die?!"
"But we need to get ba-,"
But Mira had already gotten away from his grip and was running back into the darkness, away from the torchlight.
There was going to be another gust soon. Stronger than the last. Gripping the silver ring between her thumb and forefinger she slipt it on her right hand.
Within an instant, she was running faster and more effortlessly. Like the lifting of a heavy fog, she found the boy's scent like it was a blade running through the woods, sharp and strong.
He was still alive.
The wind fell right as she dashed for cover. After it had cleared she was struck with panic, she didn't know where he was. Reasoning that it was the fault of the wind for disrupting it she found it again, but weaker and frail.
Oh no...
