The Howl of Wolves

Leaning against a tree facing the clearing I stared up into the clear night sky. I rolled my eyes. I was completely and utterly bored. It must have been hours since I arrived back into this world. And absolutely nothing has happened. When the sun first set I was terrified and panicking but now I was just tired of it all. Just kill me already, will you? I rolled my neck banging my head against the tree gently. What am I suppose to do? Where am I suppose to go? I thought dully.

"Whatever," I said to myself with a forced laugh "Who cares what happens to me here." closing my eyes and ignoring my hunger I tried to fall asleep.

I had managed to doze off eventually. As I opened my eyes the morning sun was just beginning to show itself. "Guess I'm not dead yet." I sighed getting to my feet. My stomach growled. I took a deep breath. "Yeah, yeah, I'll find something..." Finally giving up on the old hag I set off into the woods prepared for absolutely nothing.

Still wearing the uniform and some good old homemade slippers complimentary of my once favorite sweats I set out stepping on everything and anything that could possibly cause me pain. Eventually I just rolled with it without giving another thought to tetanus or other infections. Rubbing my stomach and looking as much like a bagger as one could possibly look I wandered through the woods aimlessly. I could hear something moving in the distance, maybe a cart. Making the conclusion that it was most likely a road of some sorts I headed towards the noise. Maybe, once on the road, I could find a marketplace or other travelers and get food somehow. Having my eyes glued to the ground most of the journey in order to prevent myself from tripping or stepping on anything it was only a stroke of luck that I decided to look up. Quickly and quietly pausing behind a tree I held my breath. A hunter. With a drawn bow. Poking my head out from behind the tree I stared at the man that looked to be covered in rags and animal hides. He was aiming down. A hill! I could hear the cart a little ways off. The road must be just beyond and below him. The man drew the arrow back further. No. My eyes widened as I caught my breath. I was no longer behind the tree. Coming up from behind the hunter I pushed his aim off sending the arrow flying, but high over where the road below was. Not a thought had gone through my head as I wrestled with the hunter for his bow. I could hear shouts from below and the drawing of swords. What am I doing? What the HECK am I doing? The terror only made me fight harder. Finally wretching the bow out of the hunter's hands I thought the task would become easier. It didn't. Without the bow, he wrapped his hands around my neck choking me. With my eyes wild, I tucked my chin and punched him square in the face effectively knocking him out. As his hands fell from my neck I took in a staggered breath falling backward and nearly down the hill into the road. Finally stabilizing I felt myself being forced to my feet. Looking around in a daze I realized I had been surrounded. A sword was drawn and swung down at my neck stopping only milliseconds before impact. Looking dumbly from the blade to its bearer I let out a small nervous laugh.

"What is your business?"

I felt sick in my stomach. My head swayed back. Not losing the deranged smile I responded, "You spoke." The blade was suddenly pushed against my throat causing me to finally snap out of it and realize the danger.

"Your. Business." The guard spoke again impatient.

I swallowed steadying my gaze on him, "Prevention of a possible murder attempt." The guard was wearing clothes that looked nothing like mustaches. A robe fastened with a belt, his hair in a bun. I didn't know what to make of him. But I knew what I would call him until I learned his real name; Manbun.

At my response to his question, he laughed still keeping the blade to my neck. "Really? A Uni saving one of ours?" His voice went from amusement to scorn. I frowned, "What's a Uni?" my question only infuriated him as the blade drew blood from my neck. "Don't play with me. You know what you are." Manbun said through clenched teeth. Wincing at the pain I noticed movement behind him. The hunter he's awake. "I don't know who I am, but I know who he is." I shocked myself at how steady and calm my voice was despite the inner panic I was facing and outer danger. Manbun glanced behind him at the recovering figure, then turned back to me eyeing me suspiciously. It was a stalemate.

"What's the holdup?" A voice called from below. Manbun resheathed his blade turning to the voice. "Nothing sire, just some highway bandits." With that, the hunter had scrambled to his feet making a break for it. "Catch him!" I yelled as they apprehend him. In a strange state of confusion, I had been dragged down the hill and onto the road, the hunter as well. Forced to our knees I looked around confused. Another sword had been drawn. I shook uncontrollably as I felt the end nearing. My throat was dried and covered in dirt. I felt a strange laugh ease out from me. Why is this happening to me? Why did I have to return? To die? Fine, so be it. Who cares anymore. With that, I shut my eyes and tried to relax. Might as well try to die in peace. The calm had settled within me answering my call. But another call came as well.

The howl of wolves.

A/N

Good morning, good morning! Why did I stay up late?! Good morning, good morning! TO YOU!!! (Singing in the rain - look it up)

Welp it's now 12am even though I started writing around 11 it seems I was just fighting with time again, which is rather stupid.

As you can see I can't let things stay slow for too long so we'll probably see some action in the next few installments. (But we'll have to see since I still have no idea where this story is going!)

I wrote 1,000 words so ya might as well forgive me for that ultra-short chapter yesterday. ;D

Night, I gotta wake up in 6 hours so hopefully I fall asleep with no problems!
