The Stag

"What's happening?" Mage backed away from the walls of air that were starting to get closer. Mira's eyes traced where the wind met the ground. This would have been fine, she would have been fine if only there was not someone there. She could have fought and died, but dying wasn't an option now. Suddenly a lone gust of wind ripped through the middle, sending other in after it. Mira pushed Mage back before another shot passed him. A chill ran down his spine as his eyes met the striking blue eyes of the wolf. Before he knew it, Mira had grabbed the back of his collar and slid under the wall of furious wind, dragging him in the dirt behind her. Snapping out of it, Mage scrambled to his feet, forgetting his now sore butt, and started running.

There was no warm light shining like a guide through the woods. Even the light from the moon seemed to have abandoned the darkness. The blood was pumping through his body and filling his ears like a drum. It took him awhile to realize he was alone. The wind still shook the trees around him, but the girl was gone. The wind had subsided, but not as though it would restore the stillness it had stolen from the woods, rather like the pulling back of water before another wave would form. Feeling this Mage latched onto the trunk of a tree facing away from the wave as it came crashing down.

Splinters flew through the air, his face stung even though it was mostly covered from the direct flow of wind. His grip on the tree was painful, with his hands almost ridged. As the wind stopped again, he fell away from the tree and onto the dirt floor.

There's no way I can survive that again...

Mage looked down at his hands, fingers curled and covered in blood. When he tried to straighten them, he couldn't without excruciating pain. The wind had subsided again. He turned his back to the tree. Staying on the ground he placed one hand into the other without trying to move his fingers.

The wind can't blow me if it can't touch me...

Ducking his head into his chest the wind came again.

It was stronger this time and louder. The blood pumping and the wind howling left only a strange whistle in Mage's ears. The whistle kept at a single pitch as the tree he was leaning against uprooted. The single sound was with him as the tree by some miracle didn't crush him as it shot through the air and into another tree. The sound continued as his body was tossed and thrown against a rock. His eyes dry and near closing.

The wolves had not even manifested to attack him but remained in their dark forms, hitting him with wave after wave of pain.

Each strike bringing him closer to death, his eyes almost shut.

Until the white noise subsided just as the wind did before.

But it wasn't the kind that would come again. It felt cut off short, interrupted. By something.

With the last of his strength, he fluttered his eyes open to see if he was finally dead.

The bright image almost blinded him as he faded back into the darkness, his eyes completely shut.

A white stag poised to fight.
