There was a moment of silence before Marc finally said something. "Let's go." Despite not being about to see anything there was a strange familiarity with my dark surroundings as though I already knew the layout. Marc took off in the direction the wolves had fled and I went after him hesitantly. The soft light of the clear night sky shone through the exit up ahead. Marc hadn't even slowed to check his surroundings, he just bolted. I slowed cowardly. I would normally never even leave the house at night in my own neighborhood. Taking a breath before picking up my pace I bolted right after him. Although I had often been outside at night in this world I had never found a safe place and had always been on edge, but after seeing a friendly face and having a concrete place to stay I had let my guard down which was now hard to bring back up. My eyes that had already adjusted to the darkness of the pitch black catacombs could see easily in the dark woods as I ran. Watching where I was stepping but looking up to see where Marc was, presented some challenges. At one point I had completely lost him. Coming to a halt near a tree for protection I listened carefully, closing my eyes for only a moment. Hearing a steady beat I took off again, surprisingly catching up with Marc despite still wearing the restricting dress. It was strange but my mind was too busy to think about it further. A layer of smoke in the air began to grow thick as we ran into a growing sense of dread.
Starting out as a small change in the air it soon became like a heavy fog. It began to coat my lungs causing me to choke and cough. Marc had stopped around this time, carelessly tossing me a kerchief as he took out another and wrapped it over his mouth. I did likewise. I had expected the thin fabric to offer little to no relief but surprising I felt like I wasn't even wearing it as I heaved in the now fresh clean air. Marc looked over at me annoyed, I nodded realizing he was waiting. With that, he took off again. Disappearing into the smoke screen. A howl rushed past me as the wind blew through me. Oh crap.
Minnie had been careful. Burning barely a pinch.
If a pinch was the whole box.
After getting the fire going, she carefully took out the box from her cloak. Opening it by the light of the fire, she reached her hand in. At that very moment, a nearby branch had snapped. A rush of fear suddenly whelmed up inside her as she spun around, dropping the box into the fire. It was a rabbit. Looking back at the dangerously smoking fire, the momentary relief vanished and was replaced with more fear. Stepping back and putting both her hands on her head she stood in silence for a moment before whispering in horror with her eyes wide,
"OH MY GOSH."
