"Write about being friends with someone."
____________________________________________
What does it mean to be friends?
It means being home, being accepted, being yourself without the anxiety of being judged, without the fear of being labelled, without the worry of being under constant scrutiny.
Being friends means that you can share your deepest secrets and your darkest fears, your weird dreams and inane hopes, say what you want, when you want and yet, they are there to listen.
They are the ones who do not misinterpret your words or misunderstand your silences.
Being friends also means doing what they want even if it is making a fool of yourself; because it give them joy.
Walk in the rain, the first showers of monsoon, why not?
Sit through a syrupy movie featuring an actor whom you cannot stand, oh yes!
Listen to them cry because their favourite character in a book you will never read, died, please keep passing the tissues.
And also read the books they share because the book sucked and they do not want to be the only ones who ruined their time reading it, absolutely, how else could we find something to crib about?
You can cry with them, laugh with them and at them, be at your worst and they remind you of the best you are.
Friends will approve or disapprove of what you do or say and will rarely mince their words but they will never confuse you with what you say or do.
You make an error, in school, something as simple as a spelling error for which you could lose out the topmost mark – earth shattering event for a school child. Or a life-changing mistake such as picking a wrong person to get married to. Or a wrong decision where it costs you a career.
It does not matter; they are there to help you cry, roll their eyes when they think you are not seeing what they know because you refuse to stop the moaning and self-flagellation and finally give you a lecture so that you see the better picture.
And what is that? The affirmation that 'You made a mistake, you are not the mistake.'
That one affirmation, that one conviction is enough for me and all of us.
In the end that is what it means to be a friend; complete and absolute acceptance, no conditions laid down.
