How do you feel when you love someone who does not love you back?

It has been years since we have drifted apart,

Yet, you have a special place in my heart;

I wonder how different things would have been,

If you saw in me, which in her, you must have seen.

Friends we were and that is how we would stay,

If only it were not for that one fateful day;

For a brief instant I saw you in a different light,

And love stole upon me on the thousandth sight.

I broke the friendship rule, it is quite true,

But how could I myself from stop falling for you?

Days rushed by and I hoped you would see,

My love for you and then, in turn fall for me.

Maybe I should have told you how I felt,

That even your gentle touch could make me melt;

But then the words would stop on my lips,

As many a chance, through fear, it slips.

And when I finally wanted to, it was too late,

I lost to a stranger, a beautiful twist of fate;

I knew you well and could see it on your face,

That wondrous joy, as love makes your heart race.

She was charming and cute but I was pretty too,

It is not what the mirror says, it was told by you;

Yet there must be a difference, we were not the same,

For, since you met her, you would only say her name.

I couldn't be your love, didn't want to stay a friend,

Like all good things, our friendship came to an end;

I left you holding her hand, having nothing to say,

But I have not been able to forget you to this day.

Life goes on; the heart heals and mends its crack,

Yet there are moments when memory takes me back;

To those sun filled days when we were together,

And the comfortable friendship we had with each other.

It is in times like this that my mind does cry,

And your name leaves my lips as a silent sigh;

I wonder how different things would have been,

If you saw in me, which in her, you must have seen.
