"Write about the power you felt when you told someone no. "
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NO - two letters, one syllable and it is the most powerful word in the universe, despite the aura of negativity it is shrouded in. It is so powerful that we are rarely allowed to use it; and when we do not say it because you are forbidden to say it, it is presumed that silence is assent, which is the worst assumption one can make and enforce especially considering how women are victims of this, most of the time. They are never allowed to say yes and in double whammy, their silence is considered as assent. Why not the other way round?
'NO' is a very empowering word and one that puts you in control of your words and actions, one word that is complete; no reasons needed (despite the world demanding why? Why not, I reply, you do not need answers when I say yes, so why should I justify my no. Unfortunately it does not work that way).
We have been so conditioned with equating the word no with negativity, pessimism and antagonism that we are hesitant to say it; be it in the selection of the colour of a dress to the choice of our life partner. Trying saying no and everyone wants to know why, not that any reason you mention would be acceptable to them.
And that is precisely why it is so important to learn to say that word. Start small, as I did; 'No, I do not like that dress,' or 'No, I do not want to eat another serving.' It could be a tiny step but it is liberating not to mention empowering.
Say 'NO' , once, twice, thrice, as many times as needed; till we recognise the importance and the power of this tiny word. Keep saying it, till it becomes easy and after some time, it will become your favourite word. It is mine, at least.
