Dear Boo,

Hi, just call me Oreo*.

I have recently found out from my psychiatrist and therapist that I have really bad depression, anxiety, insomnia and PTSD.

I knew I had them already, but actually being diagnosed is the horrible part.

My family was already not caring and now everyone wants to play the guilty cari was already thinking of ending my life and the cutting is a way to get rid of the pain.

Now my world is spinning! On top of all this I'm fighting with my grades, life and myself.

Please, help me.

Love,
Oreo*

Dear Oreo*,

Firstly, I apologize for this being late. You wrote to me yesterday morning and I'm just now answering at 3am. Like you I have depression and wasn't having a good day yesterday.

I know it is scary to be newly diagnosed with different disorders, especially depression. I also have depression, insomnia and PTSD. I suffer from anxiety attacks at times, but they're not severe.

Having depression is a big deal. It can affect every aspect in your life – if you let it. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. Majority of cases can be helped with medicine, especially SSRI's. However, not all chemical imbalances are due to the serotonin levels. There are different types of medicine your doctor can prescribe, it may take awhile for your body to adjust to the right one. I had to take 6 different ones before I found that a combo of Prozac and Depakote works perfectly for my bipolar disorder.

Know that you're not alone. Many people are diagnosed with depression, some just don't talk about it. I'm very vocal about mine. Because I want others to know that they're not alone.

Anxiety attacks can be mild or severe. You have to find a pattern that works for you to get through the attacks. This is called Grounding! I will include a photo below with more info about it.

Insomnia is something I also struggle with. It's more than just “trouble sleeping”. Your brain runs around in circles and thinks of everything possible as soon as you try to sleep. Well, that's how it is for me at least. There are medications you can try. You're young so they won't give you Ambien, but it's good. It literally gave me the most relaxed sleep ever. However, I am a recovering addict so I can't take it because people do get hooked on it.

Diagnosis like these often go hand in hand with addiction. Trust me, do not go down that route.

Please, do not end your life. You have a full life ahead of you. These disorders are controllable with therapy and medication. Be an advocate for each of them. Speak with others about their struggles. You will understand them on a personal level because you deal with the same. This is why I'm so open about all of mine.

Each person has their own way of dealing with their mind. Find one that works for you. But always remember that you are not alone and you have people who understand. I am one of those people. Anytime you're struggling just send me a pm and I will be here.

You're stronger than your demons! Stand up to them and don't let this overpower you. You can do it sweetheart, I have faith in you.

Love,
Boo
