Y'all, I am so tempted to write a Star Trek fanfiction right now.
I was watching an episode of Voyager, which is centered around a starship that gets pulled from The Alpha Quadrant to The Delta Quadrant by an alien life form that dies before it could return them home, leaving a 70 year long journey back. In this particular episode it focused around history and how it could be misinterpreted - a species of alien viewed Voyager as savage and cruel, believing that 700 years ago Voyager destroyed their world, but through the help or a recovered hologram, the Doctor, a member of Voyager, they discovered Voyager was not the aggressors in their history. (Also yeah, timeline was very fucked in this episode)
It was just so interesting to see the crew disengaged from their morals. Star Trek delves into ethics quite a lot and Starfleet/the crew are extremely moral. They stress how important it is to stick to Starfleet regulations - specifically not interfering in other cultures (though they do that all the time) a lot in the series, because they feel it would be selfish to lose their beliefs and potentially harm others for their own benefit, but also fear the moral decline if they were to do so.
And that got me thinking. How fucking cool would it be to write about that? About this extremely moral crew declining into cruel, twisted people willing to commit fucking genocide to return home? How desperation can affect people, how letting a few rules slide can cause a slippery slope? Psychologically, that would be so interesting to me!
I'd write it if anyone here read ST fanfiction and if I wasn't too scared to write the characters, haha.
While I'm on the topic, if I were to write Star Trek fanfiction, I'd make other alien species look much more alien. I haven't seen the more recent Star Trek series but in the older ones, aliens are very basic and humanoid and it frustrates me because aliens!! You can do anything with them!! Except all the star trek aliens are just humans with facial modifications. And I get why - expenses, the actors comfort, (but that didn't matter when it came to Jeri Ryan who wore a catsuit so tight it took an hour for her to get it off to pee, RICK BERMAN) the lack of special effects bc Star trek I super old, but also because someone (Rick Berman, ofc) couldn't bear to have aliens that weren't hot. Anyway more cool alien designs. (They've had a few non-humanoid aliens though. Never forget the floating sparkle that came into the ship, insulted everyone, called humans "ugly bags of water," threatened murder and then promptly fucked off again.)
Also! If I were to write Deep Space Nine fanfiction, Garashir would be canon. (They had...the best chemistry I've ever seen. It's incredible. The actors...their minds. Except once the officials found out it was being shipped, all their scenes were cut. Who's fault is it? You guessed it, Rick fucking Berman's)
Anyway I know I'm complaining here but for it's time Star Trek was very progressive and it's a wonderful show! It has it's faults but it did have one of the first black female leads, one of the first televised lesbian kisses (which wasn't at all sexualised) and more. It would've been so much better if Rick Berman kept his gross hands off it.
Anyway here's some garashir bc everytime someone ships garashir Rick Berman dies a little more :)
