It was a few hours after midnight that Martin woke up due to another disturbing dream. But unlike the two he had that night, this didn't let him go back to sleep. It wasn't his little brother running back from school through the storm crying and calling for help or asking him to pull him up from a trench. Those two were actually bearable for him compared to his third dream. It wasn't much...but it was everything too...he didn't know whether it is a dream or a memory...
It was just an image of his brother cuddling to Ant, looking at his husband like he is the core of his existence, the centre of his world while Ant was holding him close to his chest with a look of content as if he is the most precious thing in the whole world...
Martin sits up and blinks his eyes as tears threatened to fall. He climbs down the bed knowing he won't be able to sleep any longer and walks out of the room. He sees light in Dermott's room and realises that his brother must be praying. Usually he would come to them and talk to them and console them in crisis,.but this time...he spends his time mostly praying, probably to console himself. Because Dermott always said that an unsettled mind can never settle the storm inside another person's mind.
He walks down and could see light in many rooms. It wasn't a surprise to him that they must be awake. Mostly David coaxing Stephen back to sleep or Holly crying on Dannie's chest or Anne-Marie and Ali who are now sharing a room constantly speaking to someone on the other side of the ocean. The only person who really got any sleep was Alph, who Martin knows might be on the regular pills he used to take at night. And Simon, Johnny, Robbie and Gary are always upto the same thing. If not sleeping they will either roam around the corridor in thoughts, sometimes to subtly check on Ant and most of the times to sit around and discuss the plans to save Dec.
And Ant...can be anywhere. Sometimes in the room sleeping with his head buried deep in Dec's pillow, sometimes in a swing on the patio just staring at his wedding ring but mostly in the dining area, with a huge map of cities sprawled before him. Now that Nikki has more or less forced the pills down his throat, Martin hoped Ant will be getting a relaxed sleep. But all his hope vanishes into thin air as he entered the dining area to find the black haired man on a chair.
Martin walks to him all ready to tell him off but his heart clenches to see Ant deep asleep on the chair, surprisingly with a small smile on his face. Martin realises that he must dreaming Dec and even if he wanted to wake him up from that uncomfortable position, he decides against it. He looks around and takes a blanket from behind the sofa and slowly drapes it around the sleeping figure.
Ant snuggles into that warmth but before Martin can go back unnoticed, Ant hums and flinches his eyes open. His clouded eyes looks around and the next instance,a broken , hopeful question comes out of his mouth
Ant: "Dec?" He murmurs
Martin's heart tugs painfully inside his chest at that. He slowly caresses Ant's hair with a sigh and as Ant's eyes clear, he moves his head a bit so that Martin's hand drops.
Ant: "'m sorry...was sleeping-"
Martin: "Why did you sleep here? Go to your room" he chastises
Ant hesitates for a moment and says "I don't want to"
Martin: "Ant...now don't be a stubborn. You are clearly tired and the tablet is somewhat doing its job. So go to bed and be comfortable"
Ant bites his lips and plays with the loose threads on the blanket hesitating. It was so unlike Ant and Martin pulls another chair and sits near him.
Martin: "What is it, Ant?" He also softly
Ant year again hesitates and then says in a small voice.
