You've been deaf from birth so it was never unusual for you. You adapted to your situation and your surroundings very quickly. Your family and friends made sure they all knew sign language so they could communicate with you, and it was always something you appreciated.
The only thing that worried you was the idea of someone wanting to be in a relationship with you and not be aware of you being deaf. And that's exactly what happened with Selena.
It was just a little lunch with her friends when she spotted you across the restaurant. She was drawn to you right away. She excused herself from the table with her friends and walked over to you. She cleared her throat and introduced herself but you didn't say anything. Hell, you didn't even look her way or acknowledge her standing there.
She tapped your shoulder and as soon as you looked at her she was rambling right away, thinking that she had done something wrong and you were ignoring her. It was only when you tapped your ear and started to sign something to her that she realized that you were deaf.
She took her phone out of her pocket and went to her notes app. She typed out her name and you smiled when you read it. Selena. She held her phone out and you typed out your name, along with a sweet little message for her. "Y/n. Your name is beautiful."
Selena blushed and sat there with you for the next hour, typing out all the things she wanted to say and she let you do the same on her phone. She gave you her number and promised she'd text you. And true to her word, she did.
But when she saw you next, just a few days later back at that exact same restaurant in the exact same booth, she had learned some sign language for you. It brought a few tears to your eyes because the gesture was so kind of her.
She signed things out like what your favorite book was and when your birthday is. Just the small and simple things to get to know you a little better.
She brushed up on her sign language every day. She'd always sign to you about learning new words and phrases and you'd spend a while just letting her show you everything she learned. She was dedicated and committed to you long before you became a couple. She made sure her friends and family learned sign language and if they ever didn't know something or they got confused, she was more than happy to show them what was right to sign.
And then she asked you out. And for some reason, even though she's been dedicated to you from the day you met, you were a little hesitant.
I just don't wanna be a burden. you have an exciting job, as a performer, and then you'd have a deaf girlfriend who can't hear what you're clearly so passionate about? Don't you think people would say things?
You'd sign to her and Selena would just shake her head and smile.
Screw what they say. I don't care about them, I care about you.
She'd promise and that was more than enough for you to say yes.
And you surprised her. She took you to a show and let you sit backstage. When she came out after performing with a rush of adrenaline and a smile on her face you signed her lyrics to her. you read up on them and you signed them to her with the happiest and brightest eyes. It made her eyes fill with tears as she brought you in for your first kiss, a very passionate and loving one at that.
She took you to meet her family not long into your relationship. Her mom pulled you in for the sweetest hug you've ever had. "So happy to meet you. Selena has told us so much about you." She signed with a smile on her face. Selena stood behind you with her arms wrapped around you and her chin resting on your shoulder. When Selena's mom signed that to you Selena buried her face in your neck and smiled against your skin. "All good things. Trust me on that. She loves you a lot."
You signed it back to each other that night. Selena didn't care that she might be jumping in a little quick. She wasn't afraid one bit, and she made sure you weren't either.
And then, months later, the insecurities came. You sat on her couch as Selena signed to you about her day. you turned away and looked at the floor sadly. Selena caught this and gently hooked her fingers under your chin, turning your face and letting your eyes lock with hers.
"You okay?" She signed and you shrugged your shoulders. Selena knew something was wrong. She's never seen you so sad in the eight months you've been dating. She rubbed your shoulder and you cried for the first time in front of her. "What's wrong? Let me know so I can make it all better." She signed, kissing your cheek.
It's just that you always talk about your days in the studio and I guess I just feel bad for not being able to hear what you're clearly working so hard on.
Selena shook her head. "Don't be sorry. You can't control it. It's not your fault that you're deaf, and baby, I don't mind it one bit." She signed, taking your soft hand in hers and giving it a light kiss.
Don't you wish you had someone who could appreciate what you do, though? Music is clearly your life. It's what you love. And I can't hear it. I can't support you in that aspect as you deserve.
"Stop. No more of this, okay? I know it can't be easy not being able to hear, but I don't ever judge you for it one bit. Yes, music is my job and it's what I love. But do you know what I love even more than that?" You shook your head and as every tear fell from your eyes, Selena wiped it away. "You. I love you so much that I can't even describe it. You being deaf isn't a burden. It never will be. I don't ever wish that you could hear just so you could listen to me sing. This is something you can't control. I don't and won't ever love you or think of you any less because of it. You're beautiful and you're amazing. You think you can't hear but you've heard me in ways that no one else has. You've let me show you a side of myself that I don't ever let anyone else see. You make me better. You make me feel beautiful and you've taught me so many wonderful things, y/n. Without you, I would've never learned sign language, and just look at how much my life has changed because of that. Because of you and your big, beautiful heart. I love you just the way you are."
She signed with tears in her eyes. Every word came straight from her heart and you could tell. You threw your arms around her neck and signed a few thank you's to her.
"I love you." she signed and with the biggest and silliest grin on your face, you signed it right back to her. She gave you a kiss and rested back against the couch, pulling you in her arms and kissing your head a few times. She wasn't ever gonna let you go.
