"I was safe the entire time, wasn't I?" Katie slowly asks, "I'm not trying to be cocky or anything, I'm just asking."
Lane rolls his eyes as if it should already be obvious, looking back out onto the damp woods in annoyance. "What do you...

The day quickly turned into night. Katie had grown hungry throughout the day considering she hadn't ate but the night before. She had asked Rebel if there was anything to snack on but the African-American girl only laughed in her face. So the blonde waited until dinner.
Ace, the only one who knows how to cook out of the whole gang, cooked a large can of Northern white beans and fried potatoes that had been delicately sliced. The smell had filled Katie's nostrils from down the hallway, causing her stomach pains to worsen.
The entire gang scrambled into the kitchen when Ace had shouted "hot' n ready!" Katie was effortlessly shoved to the side. Ace stood aside as Lola and Frankie piled their plates with food.
Phoenix narrows his dark eyes at them. "Yo! Save some for ya homies!"
Phoenix shoves the two out of the way and puts what he wants in the plate. Jett rolls him eyes at Lola and Frankie, who makes sexual comments about Margo's dressy attire. A black, skater dress with net tights underneath.
The dyed blonde with pink tips furrows her brows at them. "Grow up!"
Lola makes kissy faces at her, giggling happily. Katie softly smiles at the turquoise-haired girls childish behavior. Axel, who stands in front of her, passes her a paper plate.
Katie's smiles fades, remembering what Max had shared during their gossip earlier that day. Axel motions for Katie to cut in front of him. She gives him a curt nod and gets in front of him. Rebel, who had napped the entire day, arches a brow at Axel in annoyance. Max nudges her should and shakes her head.
After Margo and Jett fills their plates, Katie looks into the two pans of food. She bites her bottom lip at the delicious sight, her stomach growling.
How simple yet appetizing! Katie takes a scoop of potatoes and puts it on her plate. Oh, it smells so good!
Katie sits down at the end of the table. Axel hands her a spoon before he sits down next to her. Without a thought, the blonde digs into her food. The taste of the fried potatoes sizzles the blonde's tastebuds. The beans have been so cooked down that they become a creamy mush when Katie goes to scoop them up with her spoon.
With a small smile, Katie chews her food quickly so she can take another bite of her food. The blonde takes bite after bite, stuffing her cheeks. But the sound of stiff laughter makes her freeze. She looks up to see everyone staring at her with raised brows and creased foreheads. Katie blushes innocently, gulping her food.
"Were we supposed to say grace first?" Katie's voice is soft.
Margo squints her eyes at Katie, her lips pressed hard. "We're limited to food supplies so enjoy every bite-"
Jett elbows her hard in the ribs. Margo whines and scowls him in confusion. Katie notices his cut lip that Lane had given Jett. Guilt fills her. She looks down at her plate, softly scooping the beans up.
"I'm sorry for being so rude." Katie apologizes for scarfing her food down.
Margo fake gags and rolls her eyes. "Why do you have-"
Jett stomps on her foot, making her whimper. She follows his steel grey eyes to the doorway. Lane stands there with his blue eyes locked on her. Margo bites her painted red lips, her voice leaving her. No one speaks as Lane slowly makes his way over to the stove where the remaining pans of food sits.
Katie slowly takes a bite of her mushy beans. Curious, she turns her head and glances at him. The blonde's green eyes lock with the gang leaders. Out of habit, she gives him a soft smile. He does not return the favor. Rebel gives her a panicked look.
Are you crazy? Rebel mentally screams at Katie.
"What are you looking at?" The sound of Lane's voice makes everyone shift in their seats, all but Katie.
"Nothing, just trying to acknowledge your presence." Katie continues to smile softly at him, turning back to her plate.
Everyone stares at her bewildered.
"What makes you think you can talk to me?" Lane's ocean blue eyes cut, "Hmm?"
Katie shrugs, thinking. "Just trying to be nice."
Lane shakes his head at her, turning back to the stove. He doesn't speak as he fills his plate with the remaining fried potato slices and Northern white beans. The Dirty Knives gang leader puts his plate down at the end of the table. Katie's heart pounds at the sight, her green eyes locked on the plate. Lane grips the edge of the table, leaning down to the blonde's shoulder. She holds her breath at the unexpected. Lane's small lips brush against her ear, his other hand holding the back of the chair she sits in. His breath is hot, tickling the soft skin of her ear.
"Your sweetness is giving me a fucking toothache." To Katie's surprise, Lane's tone isn't angry or annoyed, but full of warning.
Lane then stands up straighter and grabs his plate, walking out of the kitchen. Everyone continues to stare at Katie bewildered as she slowly begins to ear in silence.
