Katie bites her lower lip as her heart races. The sound of Lane locking their bedroom door fills the air. She gulps the saliva in her mouth.
For a few minutes, Katie hears nothing but silence. She stands in the middle of the room, facing the window. Movement catches her eye. The blonde looks to the mirror on the dresser. Her eyes widen at what she sees in the mirror. Lane stands only inches behind her. He stares at her face in the mirror, studying her.
"It's not polite to stare." Katie blushes red with embarrassment, feeling caught.
Lane's right hand grabs her left bicep, turning her body around to face his. At first, Katie's green eyes are hesitant to look into his but she forces herself to look up into them anyways. She sees worry and curiosity. The feeling of Lane's warm hands touching her sides sends shock waves up and down the blonde's body. He pulls her into his body.
"What's going on? You've been distant with me all day today..." Lane softly hesitates for a moment,"Ever since I gave you my grandmother's ring you've been acting different with me."

Katie quickly shakes her head, her hands immediately pulling his body close to hers. Her eyes fill with panic."No! No!" She assures him, pulling her left hand away from Lane's reach. "It's not the ring! I love this ring! It's beautiful."
"Then what is it?" Lane cups her face in his hands, his eyes squinting.
Katie struggles to speak for a few minutes but then breaks their eye contact. She takes a step back from Lane, taking in deep breaths and slowly letting them out.
"Lane, I can tell you anything, right?" She asks him softly, looking into his eyes from a few feet away.
The crime lord looks her up and down suspiciously. "Of course..."
"I'm all confused." Katie takes a few steps toward her lover, her face scrunching up with frustration. "I had a talk today with Rebel and Cassie earlier and they said something that...well, I can't stop thinking about."
Lane arches a brow at her. "Okay? What did they say that has preoccupied your mind?"
The blonde bites her lower lip nervously, trying to find her words. "Well, th-they said that...Elijah...Elijah thinks I'm kind of, well, cute..."
Lane stares at the blonde hard, stoney expression. Fear and panic fills Katie. She shakes her head and closes the gap between the two of them. The crime lord peers down at her with slanted eyes and a blank expression.
"I don't understand, Lane!" Katie quickly begins to ramble, "Because Elijah means nothing to me! He put a gun to my head for goodness sakes! I mean, you did too when we first met-"
Lane's eyes widen, his brows raising high. Creases form on his forehead. Katie sees the sudden change in mood in Lane's eyes, fearing that she is only making things worse. The blonde quickly tries to help the situation by continuing to ramble on.Katie holds out her hands in front of her, her green eyes wide "-but that's besides the point! I just don't understand why I'm reacting this way, Lane! When Rebel and Cassie told me, it took me by shock! They kept going on about how I had blushed and that I must like him-which I don't!-but I'm just so confused and-"
