After dinner, Lane immediately dragged Katie to his office, locking the doors. The blonde now sits in one of the chairs across from the crime lord's wooden desk. He paces back and forth in front of the fireplace, a hand continuously running through his dark hair.

"I have specific instructions not to cause conflict, but does anyone listen to the fucking bossman? No!" Lane shakes his head, growling. "I guess I'm going to have to pull a gun out and shoot somebody to make points from now on."

Katie continues to remain silent, knowing its best to remain silent when Lane is already upset with her. She twiddles her thumbs, biting the scars inside of her cheek.

"It's five-thirty and I've already had a hell of a day!" Lane shouts hysterically, raising his arms up and letting them fall to his sides. "I can't take a whole week with this nonsense. I'll kill myself!"

The words escape Katie's lips before she realizes she's speaking her mind. "Gabriella needed to be put in her place."

Lane puts his hands on his hips, subconsciously striking a sassy pose. He gives her a firm look. The blonde can't see his face but she can feel his eyes at the back of her blonde head. She shifts uncomfortably in her seat.

"And I'm beginning to think you're forgetting yours." Lane shakes his head as he wipes his mouth his hand, "Katie, what you did was childish."

The blonde sharply turns around to face him, her green eyes wide. "And if you had threw her clothes out there, it'd be okay! Just because Lane West did it!"

"Watch it!" Lane's words are like sharp knives, heat in his eyes. "I'm the boss around here! I'm the only one who stands between you and the world's clutches!"

Tears immediately swell in Katie's eyes. She shakes her head, her ponytail bouncing. Her chest rises and falls heavily as her emotions bubble to the surface. She covers her face and lower her head.

"You're not scared of a little danger, huh? You burst into tears when I slightly raise my voice at you." Lane shakes his head, wiping his nose as he looks down at the floor with a sour smirk. "You need to stop this, Katie. You need to stop bouncing into trouble and expecting me to get you out."

The blonde sucks air in, shaking her head as she tries to find her voice. "It's not me! It's everyone else!"

"Take some responsibility for your actions." The crime lord continues to pace back and forth, slowing down. "You acted out of jealousy and anger."

"You do it too!" The blonde squeaks, hiccuping.

Lane pauses, staring at her
"That's a little different. I can handle myself."

Katie starts to speak, but she softly cries. Lane heavily sighs, his eyes softening as he stares at his weeping lover. Guilt pegs his chest.

"I'm trying to protect you, Kitten." His tone is soft, reasoning. "But you need to have faith in me in order for it to work."

"She kissed you!" Katie screams angrily through her tears, "That bitch kissed you!"

"Hey!" Lane grabs her chin, jerking her chin around to face him. Her green eyes are wide and filled with fear. "I should wash your mouth out with soap for talking like that."

Katie gulps, sniffing. The crime lord stares long and hard into her teary eyes.

"Yes, she kissed me but it didn't mean anything." He shakes his head at her, not blinking as he speaks. "How many times do I have to tell you? You're mine."

"And are you mine?" Her lips pucker as she pouts in his hand, her green eyes filled with sadness.

"Yes." Lane blinks, slowly nodding. "Without question."

"How am I supposed to keep Gabriella away from you, huh? She made some valid-" Lane squeezes his grip on her jaw, silencing her.

"She's getting to your head, and that's exactly what she wants." Lane warns her, holding her chin between his thumb and index finger tightly. "But if you lay down with the dogs, you're going to get fleas."

"What does that even mean?" The blonde arches a brow on confusion.

"If you sink down to her level, you'll get burned." The crime lord's voice is even, calm. "And that's why you don't give fire to a kitten."

"Because curiosity killed the cat?" She sniffs, hiccuping.

"Because you're naive enough to walk into their trap." He lets her jaw go, his hands rubbing her tense shoulders. "Just be my good girl, okay? You're not like them out there. You're decent."

"Am I really that selfish like Gabriella said?" Katie blurts out, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Is everything always about me?"

"No." Lane shakes his head at her, "It's almost always about me."

The blonde wipes her puffy face, hiccuping. "Do I have to go outside and get her clothes?"

"Considering you're the one who threw them out there, I should make you but I won't." He cups her cheek with his hand, his thumb rubbing her cheekbone. "I'd risk my own death out there before I let you catch yours."

Katie hugs Lane, her face buried in his warm chest. He holds her close to him, slightly swaying their bodies. He kisses the top of her head affectionately.

"Don't pull shit like that again." Lane says in her hair, "Or jump out of a moving car. You scare me."

Katie chuckles, hiccuping loudly. "I scare you? The big, bad Bossman? No!"

"Even crime bosses get scared." He presses their cheeks together, pressing her tighter against him. "We're human, after all."
