Chap. 19: Then We Better Hurry

Thunder cracks in the distance, the sky darkening as thunderstorm clouds fill the sky. Rain begins to sprinkle the Earth. Racing against time through the pinewood forest on her motorcycle, Max tries to remember every detail from her encounter with Katie. From words to the her tone in her voice to the look of desperation and fear in her eyes. The girl with the pixie cut haircut parks the motorcycle in front of the building, rushing inside.

"Boss!" Max shouts when she steps inside the warehouse, "Boss!"

Everyone emerges from their new sleeping quarters, going to the front room where Max stands. Lane steps out of his office, anger in his pale face. He sits down in a wooden chair, his chest rising and falling heavily. His eyes are slightly red.

"What the fuck?" Lane growls angrily at Max, "Do you want the cops to find us?"

Lane pours himself a drink of whiskey, taking a shot. It burns down his throat. Max pants as she tries to catch her own breath.

"Katie's...alive!" Max blurts out, her face turning white at her own words. "I...saw her...at...Willy's..."

Lane's hands freeze as he holds the shot glass to his lips. Everyone stares at Max in disbelief. The girl with the pixie cut nods her head, holding her hand over her rapidly beating heart.

"It's...true!" Max pants, "I saw...her..."

Lane puts the shot glass down on the table, his eyes cut darkly at Max. His moist lips pout slightly.

"Bullshit." Lane growls, "Two bodies were found in the fire. One identified as female! Do you really expect me to believe she's alive when I only left her and Ace behind this morning?"

"There's more than just one blonde, Max." Lola crosses her arms over her chest. "It could have been anybody."

Rebel clings to Frankie's side.

"You have no evidence!" Lane's face scrunches up, "So fuck off!"

Max digs into her pants pocket for the necklace, grabbing the silver chain. She lets the necklace dangle in her hands, the key falling to the bottom of the chain. Lane's face slowly goes stoney, his body freezing. He stares at the silver chain and key. Everyone's eyes widen in shock, some mouths dropping.

"How did you-" Rebel begins to mumble, her eyes full of hope.

Max looks to a quiet Lane, tryin to remember everything. "She was with some young guy, I guess around her age..." Max thinks for a moment, "Warren! She said Warren was his name! He was pumping gas and sent her in to pay for it I guess."

"What else did she say?" Jett demands, "Did she run away? Does she know how the warehouse caught fire?"

"Was Ace with them?" Frankie asks.

Max shakes her head, her hand shaking. "Boss, I think she's in trouble. What little we talked, Blondie kept repeating that she didn't go willingly and that we needed to forget about her because if we don't, it'll make things worse. Sounds like he kidnapped her to me, Boss."

"Did she specifically say he kidnapped her?" Jett crosses his arms in suspicion.

Max looks to Lane, who stares at her coldly, an edgy darkness in his eyes. She shakes her head.

"She was in a rush. I guess so he wouldn't get suspicious and do something drastic." Max sees a darker shift in Lane's eyes, "She was shaking and she looked terrified. That's all I remember."

Jett looks to Lane, who sits there still and silent. The crime lord grabs the necklace from Max's hands, looking down at the cool metal. His heart racing.

"Boss, what should we do?" Jett asks.

"If you're thinking about going and getting her, we need to move fast." Max warns, "It seemed like they were going on a long trip."

Lane grips the arms of the wooden chair. "Then we better hurry."
