• Anastasia's house above •
The black Cadillac pulls up the front of the red mailbox with the numbers 247 on the front. Lane climbs out of the Cadillac, closing his passengers side door. He walks around the vehicle to the other side, opening the door. He reaches inside and undoes Katie's seatbelt, trying to remain as quiet as he can. He picks her up and shuts the car door with his foot. He holds her tightly against him, trying to fight the cold. He carries her to the front door, kicking the door with his foot before struggling to reach down to push the doorbell.
Within a few minutes of continuous ringing the doorbell, the front door opens. Anastasia stands in the doorway with her matching, long, striped cotton pajamas. When she sees her brother standing there with the runaway girl in his arms, she loudly gasps.
"I've got a lot to say to the both of you!" She growls in anger, her eyes slanting. "Do you know what she put me through-"
"Shh! Katie's sleeping." Lane pushes his way into the warm house. He begins to pant. "Where's her room?"
"What makes you think I want to keep her here after what she did? I can't have that!" Anastasia shakes her head, crossing her arms while propping a hip. "Not with Annie."
"Just tell me where her fucking room is." Lane rolls his eyes, "She's heavy!"
Anastasia rolls her eyes and motioning to the stairwell. "I can't have her influencing Annie."
"She won't. Trust me." Lane stares at the stairwell in dread, feeling his legs go weak. "Katie isn't going to runaway this time."
Lane follows Anastasia up the stairwell. His heavy footsteps leave the stairs creaking. He grits his teeth at Katie's surprisingly heavy weight.
"Damn, she's gotten heavier." He rolls his eyes as he pants harder.
Anastasia looks back at him with an arched brow. "She's only going to get heavier, you know."
Lanes eyes widen, throwing back his head. "Oh God!"
As they approach the top step of the upstairs floor, Lanes legs feel like spaghetti noodles. He leans against the wall for a few minutes to catch his breath. Anastasia rolls her eyes at her brother as she goes to the doorway of Katie's new bedroom. Lane nods, sweat rolling his body. He walks over to the bedroom door and turns sideways to get both himself and Katie inside. He goes stumbles over to the bed, laying her down. He then drops to his knees, heavily panting, sticking his tongue out with exhaustion.
"Fuck!" He gasps heavily, "I will not be doing that ever again."
Lane wipes the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand. He toss the pillows on the bed to the floor, pulling the covers back. He then takes Katie's converse off her feet. The blue eyed man sweeps her body under the covers, tucking her in. Lane kisses the sleeping blonde's forehead, gently tugging the scrunchy out of her hair.
Lane hesitates to lean away but forced himself to. He slowly makes his way over to the door where Anastasia stands. He takes one last long look at Katie before walking out of the room, closing the door behind him. He wipes his face, heavily sighing with exhaustion.
Anastasia's face scrunches up as she gets in her brother's face. "I can't have her here! Not after what she pulled! I had to have a talk with Annie about girls like her!"
Lane suddenly hovers her her, his finger jabbing her chest. "I told you to take care of her! She was half starved and terrified when I found her."
The brunette takes a step back, her ocean blue eyes filled with uncertainty. "She...she ran away. She was upset before she climbed out the window. Ranting on about you and...whatever. What was I supposed to do? She's of age so the police wouldn't do anything about it."
"Don't involve the police!" Lane turns away, rubbing his smooth face. "I gave you specific orders. I fucking gave you money to take care of her! It's simple. Use the money to feed her, cloth her, pay the damn doctors bills, and use whatever for the thing inside her!"
"The baby, you mean?" Anastasia arches a brow.
"Yeah, the kid." He nods, rubbing his smooth face again. "It's not that hard."
Anastasia crosses her arms, snarling at her brother. "She had Grandma Emma's ring."
"And I want you to give it back." Lane stares at her heatedly, walking to the stairwell.
"You stole that ring!" Anastasia chases after him, her hands balled up fist by her side. "I was told that our family belongings burned in that fire! But this," The brunette takes our the ring from her pocket "proves you yet again lied to me! What else are you keeping from me?"
Lane whips around, getting in Anastasia's face. The brunette sees the deadly heat in her brother's eyes. She swallows her saliva nervously.
"Grandma Emma gave me that ring for when I got married." His voice is low, raspy. "It's mine. I gave it to Katie for safe keeping. Now give it back or I will take it back."
Anastasia shakes her head. "I won't be bullied in my own house, Wesley. Never again. We aren't kids anymore."
"Then be an adult and grow up." He rolls his eyes, walking back down the stairwell to see Axel standing in the entrance of the house with Katie's suitcase. "Ana, just do as I paid you to do. Take care of Katie until I come back. I don't know when I will be back but I will be back. In the mean time, take the money and feed her, cloth her, and pay the damn doctors bills! Capeesh? It is not that hard."
Anastasia starts to fire back at him but both Lane and Axel are out the door. Carried away by what seems like the wind. She heavily sighs and wipes her tired face with her hands.
"Why me?" Anastasia thinks out loud as she walks back up the stairwell, "Why today?"
