Everyone in the black Cadillac is silent, the only sound being the heater blowing air into the vehicle. Katie bites her lower lip as she stares out the foggy window at the full moon. Her hand gently rubs her belly, feeling
The elaborate scheme for them to escape while being undetected had been successful. Max had tampered with the wires on the television set and hid the playing cards before dinner, knowing where everyone will go afterwards. The mysterious circumstance left the gang with no excuse to stay up any later than ten-thirty. Once all the nights in the lights were off, Axel and Jett pushed the girl's black Cadillac to the woods. The dogs were put in the garage to prevent them causing any noise from outside. Lane, covering Katie behind him, snuck downstairs with both of their suitcases in hand.
Katie looks at the clock on the radio, reading twelve thirty. The blonde begins so twist the ring on her wedding finger. Her stomach grumbles, hunger growing inside of her. The only food she ate the entire day was a spoonful of broth and crackers Cassie managed to sneak up to her. Katie rubs her belly, frowning at her hunger.
"What's wrong?" The panicked tone in Lane's voice catches the blonde's attention. "Are you sick again?"
Katie looks over to her left to see Lane staring at her. Though the vehicle is dark in the night, Lane's eyes seem to glow in the dark. The blonde slowly lowers her head, feeling guilty for admitting her hunger.
"No, I'm...I'm hungry. I didn't really ate much today." She looks back out the window as an excuse not to look at him.
Lane slowly looks her up and down, examining her. He stares at her in thought.
"Axel, did either one of you pack anything for the trip?" The blue eyed man asks.
The car remains silent for a few minutes. Lane looks between the two expectantly.
"I guess we were too focused on making a getaway to think about grabbing some food." Axel shrugs, looking to Max worriedly.
"That's okay." Katie shifts in her seat, her hunger pains becoming louder. She forces a small smile. "I'd probably throw it up anyway."
"Stop at the next gas station." Lane nods, looking out his window.
Katie bites her lower lip, struggling to gain the courage to speak her mind. She looks over at Lane's knee, which bounces fiercely.
"Are you angry at me?" Katie forces herself to speak her mind.
"Why would I be angry with you?" Though she can't see it, Lane can see her reflection on the window. "Have you done something that will cause me anger?"
The blonde lowers her head, the feeling of sadness overwhelming her. "Well I'm...I'm pregnant..."
Lane lowers his eyes to his lap, crossing his right over his left. Suddenly, the sound of a hiccuped sob filled the silent air. The blue eyed man looks up at the blonde in alarm. Her noticeably blotched, tear filled cheeks causes something deep inside Lane to shift. His eyes go soft, a pinch in his chest. He holds out his arm for her, not wanting to grab and jerk her body around.
"Look at me." He commands, "Look at me-"
Katie looks up at him with tears in her green eyes. When their eyes meet, Lane sees the fear in her eyes. Katie sniffs, realizing that his arms are reached out for her to embrace. Without hesitation, she jumps into his embrace. Katie wraps her arms around Lane's neck, her tears falling into the side of his face and down his neck.
"Careful!" He hisses at her, rolling his eyes. "Don't get too wild. Calm down."
Katie's face scrunches up, grasping his coat as she buries her face into his neck. "Do you hate me now that I'm pregnant?"
"Hate you?" Lane pry's her off of him, making him look her in the eyes. "Did I ever say that I hated you?""So...do you still want me?" Katie sniffs, wiping her tears off her blotched cheeks.
Lane's expression goes soft, his eyes like pools of water. "Was there ever any doubt that I didn't?"
"Mmmhhhmm." Katie nods, a child like sadness in her eyes. "You said you didn't want a baby, so...now that I'm knocked up you don't want me!"
"Shhh!" He presses his forehead to hers, holding her close to his warm body. "Be quiet for now. Okay? Until we get you something to eat."
Lane pulls his coat open, tucking her inside. His arm holds her body close as his left hand pulls her legs over his lap. He kisses her forehead while he cuddles her to his chest. Katie lays her head in the crook of Lane's neck. She loudly sniffs, wiping her tears away.
"Lane?" Katie says in a child like tone of voice, her face twisting in confusion at her own tone.
"Yes?" He says softly.
"Where are we going?" She says.
"Somewhere safe." He presses his cheek against her head. "Somewhere Lebedev would never think to look."
"Lane?" She repeats herself.
"Yes?" He closes his eyes, his tone full of annoyance.
"Are you scared?" She bites her lip at the anticipation.
"Of what? Lebedev finding you? No." He gently shakes his head.
"I mean, being a father?" She softly whispers, rubbing his chest with her right hand.
Lane remains quiet for a long time. Katie immediately regrets her question after it passes through her lips. Anxiety fills her as she begins to contemplate what could be going through her lover's mind.
"Get some sleep." Lane's voice drops lower as he sighs his words, his grip on her loosening. "It's good for you."
Katie stares out the window, her anxiety levels rising. She gently lays her head on his shoulder. Her green eyes stare out the window at the leafless trees, imaging them as monsters who are watching down on them as they pass through in the moonlit darkness.
