32 - Ghosts From the Past

"HYDRA DOESN'T LIKE LEAKS," SITWELL COMPLAINED AS SAM DROVE THEM TO THE TRISKELION.

Sam cut the man a look. "So why don't you try sticking a cork in it."

After the group had kidnapped Sitwell, they had promptly gotten into Sam's vehicle, and were now on their way to SHIELD headquarters so they could stop the launch of the helicarriers. Blake, Steve, Natasha, and Sitwell were crammed into the back, while Raevanna sat in the passenger seat next to Sam. She kept her eyes trained on the HYDRA agent through the rearview mirror, her eyes flashing red every now and then in a warning not to try anything.

"Insight's launching in sixteen hours, we're cutting it a little bit close here," Natasha said, leaning forward and poking her head between the front seats.

Steve nodded. "I know. We'll use him to bypass the DNA scans and access the Helicarriers directly."

"What?!" Sitwell cried, panic flooding across his face. "Are you crazy? That is a terrible, terrible idea."

Suddenly there was a loud bang on the car roof, and seconds later a hand smashed through the window before pulling Sitwell out and throwing him into the oncoming traffic, killing him. Raevanna recoiled in shock, but before she could respond gunfire began to echo around them as bullets tore through the roof. Thinking quickly, she grabbed the brake handle and pulled it hard, stopping the car abruptly and making the person who was firing drop down onto the street. Then, the five watched as he slid backwards across the ground in a crouch, sparks flying from his metal fingertips as they scraped against the asphalt.

It was the Winter Soldier.

"Not this asshole again!" Blake shouted in both anger and terror.

Raevanna started to ready herself for an attack, only to be thrown forward as another car slammed into them from behind and began pushing them along the highway. Then, the Winter Soldier quickly jumped back onto their car, smashed his fist through the windscreen, and yanked out the steering wheel with pure, brute strength.

"Shit!" Sam shouted.

Natasha and Blake began to shoot at the Winter Soldier, but he jumped onto the vehicle behind them to avoid the gunfire. Then, the car slammed into the highway's divider as it was pulled off the road, causing Raevanna and Steve to hold on to their respective car doors. Raevanna grabbed Blake and pulled her towards her, then nodded at Steve as he held onto Natasha and Sam.

"Hang on!" Steve shouted.

Then, both he and Raevanna broke open the car doors. While Raevanna's wings shot out, wrapping around herself and Blake as they tumbled onto the road, Steve, still holding onto Natasha and Sam, slid down the highway on the car door.

Raevanna hissed when her wings scraped against the ground, and as soon as their momentum had slowed she let go of Blake. Landing on her stomach, Raevanna looked up just in time to see the car flip into the air before landing in the oncoming traffic, but she quickly pushed her momentary shock aside as she ran over to Blake.

"Are you okay?" Raevanna asked.

Blake nodded, allowing Raevanna to help her stand. "Yeah, I'm alright. Thanks."

Raevanna nodded, but as she started to reply the sound of a gun being chambered hit her sensitive ears, and she spun around, pushing Blake behind her and forming a shield with her magic just as the Winter Soldier and the HYDRA agents began firing at them.

Steve, Natasha, and Sam instantly scattered and ran off in different directions, while Blake grabbed Raevanna's arm and dragged her behind a car to protect them. Then, Raevanna looked up just as the Winter Soldier took a rocket launcher and aimed it at Steve.
