Addison walked along a lonely road. The chilly air made her pull her coat on tighter. She walked down the road, heading towards the convenience store she worked at.
She saw the shop blocks and smiled as she started to walk at a brisker pace. The air was really chilly and she looked forward to the heated atmosphere of the convenience store.
She went in and saw her colleague, Jeff behind the counter.
As soon as he saw her, he waved at her.
"Oh hi Addie," Jeff said, giving her a small wave. "Guess my shift's done then."
Addison smiled. She asked him to wait while she went to the back to change into her uniform. She came out and saw Jeff preparing to leave. He went to change into regular clothes as soon as he saw Addison come out.
Addison sighed as she stepped behind the counter to begin her work.
Jeff came out in his regular clothes and left after waving at her, a black backpack slung over one shoulder. She waved back with a smile.
She helped the customers and checked the stocks.Addison sighed as she finally made it into the room she rented. She sank down on the sofa and sighed. She had to walk all the way back from her workplace.
The room she rented wasn't so great, but still cozy enough for a lone college girl like her. She sighed and tied her hair up before making her way to the attached bathroom. She took a nice hot shower and changed into something more comfortable before sitting on her bed to eat the takeaway she bought from the convenience store she worked at.
Addison grabbed the remote and turned the television on. They weren't many channels, but the news channel proved entertaining enough for now. She watched with wide eyes as the chirpy newscaster talked about something that seemed a lot like it came out of a conspiracy theory video.
"By some unknown cause, the little boy had teleported to the side of the road when a flash of light passed him," the newscaster reported. "The victim, age eight, had no recollection of what actually happened.
"'I don't know what happened, the light passed and I found myself on the side of the road,' says the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous," the newscaster went on. "It seems to be a mystery that even the experts have no explanation for."
"Oh my god..." Addison found herself muttering as she forked some of the readymade noodles into her mouth.
What made it worse was the fact that this incident didn't happen at some faraway state, but in her town itself. Chills ran down her spine as she realised how close it happened.
And how recent.
Addison turned the tv off and decided to watch something on her laptop instead. But as soon as she opened her browser, news of this so called 'superhero with teleporting ability' filled her dashboard. She ignored those and went to YouTube to watch some videos there.
And behold! There were street footages of said incident there too. Apparently, this has been happening a lot in that town, but this was the first time it had ever been showed in the news. Some conspiracy theorists even made videos of it too. Addison knew that if she watched even one of them, she'd be kept awake that night.
So she decided to just binge on short clips from her favourite movie. The full movie wasn't available, but at least the best parts were.
But still, she couldn't get her mind off the alleged Teleportation Superhero. They even fought crime in that city, even going as far as teleporting a bunch of criminals right to the police station.
Addison got goosebumps just hearing all of that.
She decided to spend the night, studying and finishing some of her schoolwork.
But she couldn't. It's like a new problem had just loomed up. And for some reason, she felt like she herself would be teleported to a desert or something. The stories were all so chilling.
Addison shuddered and put her books aside as soon as she finished her work. She couldn't even sleep well that night.Another day at college, and another day at work. Addison dragged herself to the convenience store and checked in for work. She was a little late, and Jeff looked visibly impatient.
"Hey, sorry buddy," Addison said, hurrying to change into uniform. "Had to stay back a little."
"It's fine, hurry up, Addie," Jeff said, already changed into his everyday clothes. "I'll wait for you."
Addison quickly changed and stepped behind the counter. Jeff was still there, now waiting at the counter as a customer.
"Here, I'll scan those for you," Addison said, scanning the barcode for the stuff he bought. "Breakfast for tomorrow morning?"
"More like midnight snack," Jeff said with a grin. "It feels kinda weird to be here instead of behind the counter. Usually I'll be the one scanning things for customers."
Addison chuckled and stuffed the things into a plastic bag before taking the money that he paid. She tore the receipt and handed it to him together with the bag of things.
"See ya tomorrow," Addison said, waving at him. "I'll be early tomorrow, promise."
Jeff gave her a small wave and left. He jumped onto his bike and rode away. Addison sighed, sinking down on the stool in the empty shop. After a bunch of customers, some nice enough to tip, and some painfully annoying, Addison's coworker, Fiolina arrived. She arrived a little early, and ended up hanging around in the shop while waiting for Addison. Fiolina was a nice person, someone whom Addison loved to relate to.
"Have you heard about the strange teleportation thingies?" Fiolina said eagerly, munching on some chips.
"Of course, it's all over the news now," Addison said as she packed up. "Scary, right?"
"Yeah!" Fiolina said, nodding furiously. Her auburn curls bounced together with her head. "Hey, one of the street cameras captured a video of yet another sighting. If you look closely, there's a silhouette of a person in the flashing teleportation."
"What do you mean?" Addison asked, zipping up her bag of stuff. "Most of it's just a flash of light."
Fiolina pulled out her phone and scrolled through. After a few seconds, she showed the phone to Addison. To her surprise, there really was a silhouette of a person.
"So it's a all a person's doing?" Addison asked in surprise. "Who could it be?"
Fiolina shrugged, putting her phone back into her pocket. "Who knows? Probably a video game character sucked into real life?"
"Don't be silly," Addison swatted her hand slightly with a snort. "Video games aren't real! But... who's doing this? Is it some sorta graphic editing?"
"I don't think so, Addy," Fiolina said, shaking her head. "This is from the street camera. Look at the quality. Does this look edited?"
Addison frowned at the picture and sighed. At last she just shrugged.
"I have no idea, Fio," Addison said, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "Anyway, see you tomorrow."
Fiolina waved at her and stepped behind the counter to start her work. Addison started her way home.
