Addison began her walk home and stopped by a food truck and bought a hot dog, together with some fries and went home. She chuckled when she remembered the dream she had that morning, one where she had to pass a graveyard. There wasn't even a cemetery anywhere near there, let alone on the way home.
'That was nonsensical...' Addison thought with a chuckle. She was alone in that street, so no one judged her for smiling to herself.
And then she heard it. The sound of a twig snapping behind her. Just like in the dream, all of her instincts told her only one thing.
Run.
She didn't even turn back as she bolted all the way home. Her neighbours looked at her in surprise. When she made it to the rental home, the other tenants thought there was an earthquake. Turns out, it was just Addison rushing up the stairs to her room as fast as she could.
She heaved a sigh of relief as soon as she locked the door behind her, but then there was something else that she remembered.
Addison slowly made her way to towards the bathroom, her feet making no sound. She held the heaviest object she had, which happened to be her flask of water. She'd usually fill it up with coffee every morning, but now it held cold water from her college water dispenser.
She held it up and slowly pushed her bathroom door open. She pointed the flask out, her eyes scanning for any potential attackers, but found none. Addison sighed and sat down on the toilet seat, exhausted.
A knock suddenly erupted form her room, followed by the landlady's voice calling her. Addison got up and wiped her sweat before leaving the bathroom. She put the flask on the desk and opened the door, plastering on a smile.
"Hi there, Mrs. Kennedy," Addison greeted with a smile. "What is it?"
She noticed that the older woman had a concerned look on her face.
"The others said that they heard screaming this morning," Mrs. Kennedy said, a crease forming between her brows. "And they claim it came from your room. Are you okay, honey?"
Addison bit her lip and nodded. "I'm fine, Mrs. Kennedy. Just had a very vivid nightmare. That's all."
Mrs. Kennedy chuckled. "It might've been something you were thinking about. I once dreamt an alligator was chasing me just because I watched a documentary about reptiles that day. It's nothing, dear. Don't think much about it."
Addison smiled and nodded. "I'm sure that's the case, Mrs. Kennedy."
"Please, just call me Felicia," Mrs. Kennedy smiled. She seemed to finally remember something, and held up a jar. "Brought you some cookies, dear. And I won't say no for an answer."
Felicia smiled and handed her a jar of freshly backed chocolate chip cookies. It was still slightly warm, and Addison couldn't resist it. She smiled and gratefully accepted it.
"Thanks, Mrs. Kennedy- I mean Felicia," Addison smiled. "That's very kind of you."
Felicia smiled and waved her goodbye before leaving. Addison closed the door and heaved a sigh of relief before examining the jar of cookies in her hand.
"Mmm..." Addison's mouth watered. She quickly put it down on the table and muttered. "After dinner..."
She grabbed her towel and went to the bathroom to have a hot shower before dinner. Two weeks later, and still no news about the alleged superhero. Addison still thought it was all a part of a leaked conspiracy theory. But then again, she herself felt it. She herself witnessed it firsthand. How could it be merely a conspiracy theory?
Everyone were starting to forget about it, even Fiolina. She was more interested in watching puppy videos now. Addison was a little glad since her episode was forgotten too.
Now that she thought about it, she was the last known victim!
And if there were two things that people always remembered, it would always be the first, and the last. More to the latter.
Addison bit her lip and looked over at Fiolina, who sat at the table near the window, looking through her phone while stuffing her face with hot and spicy potato chips. She didn't seem to notice Addison staring at her, laughing at the funny dogs on her phone screen.
"Hey Fio, any news on our local superhero?" Addison finally asked.
"Nope," Fiolina simply said, crunching down on potato chip. "No news at all." She looked down at her screen again and started laughing before getting up and coming to Addison. "Hey, you should watch this! So cute!"
It was a puppy reacting to its owner playing dead. The poor dog thought he really had died and sat next to him, silently begging for him come back.
"That's a little mean of him," Addison frowned. "The poor doggie..."
"I know right!" Fiolina said with a giggle. "But so cute! Aww!"
"Do you have a dog?" Addison asked.
Fiolina shook her head with a pout. "I wish... but I'm allergic."
"That's too bad," Addison said. She looked at the time and realised it was time to go. "Fio, you better get ready. It's almost time for your shift."
Fiolina looked at her watch and nodded before rushing to the back room to get changed. She came out again, in her uniform and took over for Addison.
"So glad it's Friday," Addison sighed after she finished changing. "I can sleep in a bit."
"Same..." Fiolina sighed. "College is really killing me..."
Addison nodded in agreement and grabbed a pack of instant spaghetti and popped it into the microwave. She grabbed a few buns for tomorrow's breakfast, and a carton of milk. She grabbed a few sausages too as a snack for later.
She slammed the things onto the counter and looked up at Fiolina, who chuckled at the stuff she bought.
"Breakfast and lunch?" Fiolina asked, taking the scanner to scan the things. "You seem to only eat instant food."
"I don't eat this everyday," Addison shrugged. "You should've seen the other guy that works here. He eats like this everyday, and drinks SlurpSlurp all the time."
Fiolina grinned. "You mean Jeff?" Addison nodded. "Oh my gosh, he's so cute!"
Addison chuckled. "He flexed his biceps at me the other day. He's quite fit, despite drinking SlurpSlurp like every single day."
Fiolina pouted, scanning the barcode for the things Addison bought. "How come I don't get biceps? I wanna see them too!"
"Do you even talk to him?" Addison asked, leaning against the counter. "I always make fun of him for drinking SlurpSlurp everyday. He calls me Dietitian because of that."
"Lucky you..." Fiolina sighed, pulling out a plastic bag. She stuffed Addison's stuff inside it. "All I get is that surly guy that either looks like a frog, or a bull. Even that, if he's not angry."
Addison snickered. "That's really sad. But you do get to meet Jeff, right?"
"Yeah, but he never really talks to me," Fiolina shrugged, collecting the money that Addison paid. Usually just stares at his phone, or eating something.
"Huh... that's funny," Addison said, collecting her change. "He's fine with me."
She took the bag, bid Fiolina goodbye, and started her walk home. She was glad that she was just in time for the bus. Or else, it's another day of walking in the night. Not like she minded, she loved walking through the city in the night.
Unless she was being chased by a mob.
Or a mangy dog.
Or a creep that stands alone in graveyards.
