Fiolina stormed into the shop an hour early and sat at the table near the window, earning a groan from Addison. "Tell. Me. Everything!"
Addison sighed. She took a swig of her soda and started.
"I was walking home, a mob disturbed me, someone grabbed me, and boom, there was a white light and then I found myself on the main road," Addison finished. "I saw a black shadow vanish behind a wall, and I followed it, but they disappeared into a white light."
"Was it a girl or a guy?" Fiolina asked, tearing open a bag of chips she haven't paid for yet.
"Hey, pay for that!" Addison frowned. "And no, I'm not sure if it was a girl or a guy. I didn't see much of them, besides their back. Even that, from a distance. Don't tell anyone about this, or I'll strangle you and have you teleported one way to the Netherworld. You hear that?"
"Cross my heart," Fiolina said, crunching in some chips while crossing her heart with a finger. "I won't tell anyone."
Addison didn't know if she could trust her. "Get over here, I need to scan that. And you need to pay!"
Fiolina grunted and came to the counter. She handed the half-eaten bag of chips to Addison to scan. Addison grimaced and shook her head as she scanned it. Fiolina handed her the money for it. She went back to her spot near the window and sat down on the barstool. Addison watched her crunch in the chips with a frown.
"Can I ask you something?" Addison began.
"What is it?" Fiolina asked, her mouth full.
"Why are you here so early?" Addison asked with a scowl. "There's more than an hour left."
"I wanted to ask you about... it," Fiolina grinned. "And I did."
Addison shook her head. The welcome tune blared and two teen boys stepped in. Fiolina said nothing more about last night and continued chomping on her potato chips. Addison waited as the two teen boys went to the fridge to grab a few drinks. They came to the counter and put two cans of beer in front of her.
"Yeah, that ain't happening, kids," Addison said, shaking her head. "Can I see your ID?"
The two boys gulped, and nervously shifted their feet. The place was silent, save for Fiolina's chomping.
"That's what I thought," Addison said with a frown. "Go put those back and take something else. The strongest drink you can take is malt."
The boys sighed and returned the beers to the fridge. They came back with two bottles of malt.
"That's more like it," Addison said, scanning the items. Fiolina burst into laughter behind the boys. "You can't buy alcohol without showing your ID. Unless you're a middle-aged man, or a grandpa."
The boys silently nodded. One of them suddenly perked up.
"Hey, aren't you the lady that went after the teleport guy last night?" One of them, a black-haired youth, piped up. "Got appeared in the main road, or something?"
Fiolina snickered. Addison shot her a warning glance before turning back to the boys. "What if I am?"
The boy shrugged. "Just wanted to say that I wish it happened to me."
"Trust me, you wouldn't wish that if you saw what happened before that," Addison handed them their receipt and change. "Anyway, here's your money. Now scram!"
The boys left, and Fiolina was left laughing so hard at Addison's annoyed face.
"Stop that," Addison scowled. "If it happened to you..."
"Fine fine, getting chased by a mob is no fun," Fiolina admitted in defeat. "Never really been there before, but it's scary enough to watch videos of people getting chased."
Addison nodded. "Trust me, it's a lot scarier than those videos."
"I can tell," Fiolina said with a nod. She examined her empty chip bag and came to Addison. "Can you throw this away for me?"
Addison scowled and shoved it into the bin under the counter. Fiolina went towards the aisles and grabbed a bag of mixed nuts. This time, she paid first.
"How are you so thin?" Addison couldn't help but ask. "You're always eating junk food. And then there's me. I rarely eat junk food and sugar, and look at me. At least ten kilos heavier than you!"
That was a big fat lie, since it was only that morning did she stop at a fast food restaurant for breakfast.
"Hey, nuts are healthy!" Fiolina argued, holding up the small bag of sugar-glazed nuts. "They're organic!"
"Yeah, but coated with sugar," Addison pointed out. "If you ate the regular unsalted and unsweetened nuts, then it's healthy."
Fiolina scowled and literally poured the nuts into her mouth. Addison watched in shock.
"Careful, don't choke yourself," Addison joked. "Wouldn't wanna take over your shift as well."
Fiolina scowled and chomped the nuts in her mouth. Addison shook her head and left the counter to get herself some orange juice for a change. She got herself more chocolate and scanned the barcodes before stuffing it into her backpack.
"Fio, your shift's gonna start in five minutes," Addison said, watching the other girl still chomping nuts while staring at her phone. "Fio? Oi Fio!"
"Yeah yeah, I'm coming," Fiolina rolled her eyes, pouring the last of the nuts into her mouth. She loudly crunched them and handed the empty packet to Addison to throw away.
"I'm not your dustbin..." Addison said, rolling her eyes. "There's one right next to you, and you insist on throwing it away
For some reason, she felt more and more annoyed with her, especially since she made a huge fuss of whatever happened last night. Addison was not proud of it, rather scared stiff. Fiolina seemed only too happy to find out that this happened to Addison.
Fiolina returned, now clad in uniform, and watched Addison quickly grab her bag from behind the counter and head off to the back room. She zipped he hoodie up and pulled the hood on to cover most of her face. When she stepped out, Fiolina burst into laughter.
"Oh my gosh, is it because of last night?" Fiolina laughed. "Oh Addie..."
"People like you are bombarding me with questions as soon as they recognise me!" Addison scowled, her face slightly shadowed. "Anyway bye-bye, see you tomorrow."
Fiolina grinned and waved her goodbye, getting ready for her shift. Addison stepped out into the cold and pulled her hood down to her nose to keep the wind from flying it back.
She let out a puff that clouded in front of her and started her way towards the Chinese restaurant to get herself something else besides convenience store food and junk food. She sincerely wished that her mother was there to cook dinner for her.
Addison sighed and decided that this was her lot for now. Wait till semester break, she'll rush home and ask her mother to make her something tasty everyday.
