Chapter 28

Usagi twenty eight

"Look out everybody, 'cause here we come!!" Naruto shouted as the four entered the room.

Hundreds of eyes focused on them. It appears that they made quite the entrance.

As soon as they entered the room, they were approached by a few familiar faces.

"Sasuke! Where've you been, cutie?!" Ino threw herself on the boy, excited to see her crush finally arrive.

"Ino-pig!! Get off of Sasuke!" Sakura, was not happy to see her rival appear.

"Hello to you too, Sakura. Still hoping the giant forehead look is gonna come into fashion, eh? How sweet."

Said forehead growled. "What did you say?!"

"How troublesome..." Shikamaru sighed. Women.

Usagi, noticing her friends, walked over to them and helped herself to Choji’s bag of chips.

As Ino and Sakura continued fighting, Kiba, Shino and Hinata joined the party.

"Looks like all the gangs here." Kiba commented with a smirk. "So... All three of this year’s genin teams decided to apply, huh? I wonder how far we'll all get... What do you think?" He directed the last question at Sasuke, cocky smirk still plastered to his face.

Sasuke smirked back. "Trying to psych us out by acting cool?"

"Who's acting? The way we've trained, no way can you beat us."

"Oh shut up!" Naruto shouted. "You guys won't beat us!"

Another person then butted in. "Would you guys do us all a favour and shut up?" It was a silver haired Konoha genin. "You three gangs are all fresh from the academy. This isn't a school field trip, you know. You kids need to open your eyes."

"Who do you think you are?" Naruto growled.

"Names Kabuto." He smirked, pushing his glasses up his nose. "You kids better watch out. The group behind you are from Amegakure. They've got short fuses. Everyone here is on edge, waiting to take the exam. I wanted to give you a heads up before someone beats the crap out of you... But it's probably unavoidable. Like all rookies, you think you know everything. I remember what it was like."

"Are you saying this is the second time you've applied?" Sakura said.

"Second? No, this is the seventh time."

After throwing a few compliments his way, Kabuto pulled out some shinobi skill cards. After explaining what they were, Sasuke requested to see a few cards.

"Gaara from Suna, Rock Lee from Konoha and Usagi Senju from Konoha."

Usagi glared at Sasuke. Ever since he had called her weak, she's been determined to prove him wrong and overcome her fears.

"You know their names? No sweat then." Two seconds later, Kabuto held three cards.

"First up is Rock Lee. He's a year older than you..." Kabuto read the information on the card. "Next... Gaara of the Desert... I have much less on him, but he's come back from every mission without a scratch.

"Now, there was no Usagi Senju listed, but if it's the redheads card you want, it was listed under Usagi Hatake. However... The cards completely blank. All information on Usagi Hatake is classified."

Everyone turned to Usagi, who played clueless, despite knowing the exact reason why all information on her was classified. If word got out about her rinnegan, Kami knows what might happen...

Usagi couldn't help but remember how Ringo had said someone was after her... And how she had been sent by another rinnegan user.

Somehow, word had gotten out, despite how careful everyone had been.

"It would seem Usagi is a complete mystery." Kabuto said.

"Whys your card blank?" Naruto asked.

[Because, I am far from weak.] Usagi wrote down, practically shoving her notebook in Sasuke’s face.

"Or maybe they left out your information because you're too weak." Sasuke smirked.

Usagi’s face turned as red as her hair. She was pissed. [Sasuke Uchiha, I am stronger than you!]

"Prove it." He said.

[Only the weak give in to cheap temptation.]

"Only the weak refuse to fight."

[If you weren't my teammate, you'd be dead.]

"I'm so scared." Sarcasm was obvious in his voice.

Before she lost her cool, Usagi quickly turned around and ignored everything that was said after that... Until...

"MY NAME IS NARUTO UZUMAKI AND NONE OF YOU ARE GONNA BEAT ME!! YOU GOT THAT?!"

Only Naruto...

Shikamaru did not like what Naruto said. "That idiot just turned a room full of strangers into a room full of enemies with just one sentence."

... Two seconds later, Kabuto was being attacked by a sound nin. The battle ended up with him on the floor puking. It was rather disgusting, but Usagi still found it oddly entertaining.

She stepped away nonetheless, not wanting puke on her. It was then when a poof of smoke clouded the room.

"WOULD EVERYBODY SHUT UP?!!" A crowd of ninja appeared at the front of the room.

'Ibiki’s here.' Usagi thought, kind of relieved she knew who the proctor was.

"Sorry to have kept you waiting. My name is Ibiki Morino. I'm the proctor for the first part of the exam." Ibiki then pointed towards the back of the room. "You kids from the sound village! You cannot carry on the way you please when the exams about to start! Or do you want to be disqualified?"

"Sorry sir." The bandaged sound nin replied. "It's our first exam, we got a little carried away."

"Is that so... Then it's time to lay down a few ground rules. From this point onwards, there will be no more fighting without the express permission of the examining officer. And even if that permission is granted, anything that endangers another applicant’s life is strictly forbidden. Any of you who break the rules are out. No second chances. Got that?

"The first part of the chunin exam is about to commence. Turn in your written applications and take one of the seating assignment cards... And report directly to the seat indicated. When everyone's seated, we'll pass out the written part of the test."

"... A PAPER TEST?!"

Usagi sat down next to... Gaara.

"You have one hour... Starting... NOW!!"

Usagi buried her head in the paper and started working on the first question.

'No way can anyone answer these...' Usagi thought... Except she of course, being the smart child she is, answered each question flawlessly.

'You're supposed to cheat, you know.' A voice boomed in her head.

'... What do you want, Shukaku?' Usagi mentally sighed.

'Nothing... I'm just curious...'

'About what?'

'How did you come across those eyes?'

'No point in lying to a tailed beast.' Usagi thought. '... When I was three I opened my eyes, and... Everything looked different.' Her mind drifted to her mother. The things she had said and done… How much she hated her eyes.

'... I can read your thoughts, you know. I should also tell you... I know a few things about Rei Uzumaki.' ... Kami knows how many of Usagi’s thoughts he had heard.

Usagi dropped her pencil. 'You... Do you know where she is?'

'Last I heard, she was in Amegakure. The woman's crazy, so I've heard. Seeking to hire someone to kill you.'

'I didn't think she'd go that far... Amegakure. I'll have to pay them a visit after the exam. Thank you, Shukaku.'

'No problem, kid. Don’t screw it up.' And just like that, Usagi had befriended a feared demon... And Gaara gave her a funny look, as he was probably curios as to just how she could talk with his demon, and why she got along so well with it.

--At the tenth question--

"Alright! Get ready for the tenth question!" Ibiki boomed. "Before we get to the tenth question itself... I'm adding one more rule..."

It was then cat ears walked back into the room, just in the nick of time. He had left to go to the toilet… But it was obvious he really went so he could cheat.

Ibiki then went on to explain the new rule. "First... You must choose to accept or reject this tenth question. If you reject the question, you lose all your points immediately... And fail! All your teammates fail right along with you."

"Why would we chose to reject it then?!" A bunch of impatient genin shouted.

"Because of the other rule... If you accept the question and get it wrong... You will never be permitted to apply for the chunin exams ever again!!"

"You can't be serious! There are ninja here who've taken the exam more than once already!"

"I wasn't making the rules in past years... I am now. Anyone who has doubts, would be smart to reject the question now... And come back and reapply next year. The choice is yours. Those who chose to reject the question should raise your hand. Once your number has been confirmed, you will leave the room."

Slowly, hands made their way up. Teams left the room, and then...

Naruto’s hand went up. The rest of team sevens jaws almost hit the floor, but all was safe when...

"NEVER UNDERESTIMATE ME!! I don't quit and I won't run!!" Naruto slammed his hand on the table. "I'll accept your stupid question! Even if I risk being a genin for my whole life... I'll still become Hokage, believe it!! I'm not afraid of you!!"

"I'll ask you one last time." Ibiki spoke up. "This is a decision that could affect the rest of your life. Quit now while you still have the chance."

"I never go back on my word. That's my nindo, my ninja way!" Naruto smiled.

"Good call." Ibiki... Smiled? "So, everyone who's still here... You've just passed the first exam!!"

"... What?!" A room full of confused genin all yelled.

"There is no tenth question." Ibiki explained. "Beyond the whole accept or reject thing anyway..."

After explaining how the test was to see how the genin’s spying abilities were and giving a nice speech on chunin’s and their responsibilities, the window smashed to pieces.

It was none other than... "None of you are in any position to celebrate! I am the second proctor, Anko Mitarashi!! Times a-wastin' people, let's go!!"

After realizing she had entered to early, Anko blushed a little, but recovered quickly. "Ibiki! You passed twenty six teams?! You've gone way too easy on them!"

"This year, we have some exceptional applicants." He smirked.

"Yeah right! The only exceptional genin here is my Usagi!"

As Usagi hid her head in shame, the entire crowd of genin stared at her.

"You know this lady?!" Naruto shouted.

"Give the kid a break, Anko." Ibiki sighed.

Ignoring Ibiki, Anko continued to shout. "Now, follow me!!!"
