Car Ride Question And Answer

(No one's POV)

The sky is dark on this summer night. Cooper, Lexi, Noah, and Jasper pack up their things and head to the exit of the small motel.

Cooper swiftly forces the door open and holds it so everyone can walk out.

"You guys can sleep in the car if you want, it's a few hours home and it's not like we've slept much." Cooper says while pulling keys out of his pants pocket.

He unlocks the trunk and everyone loads their things into the small car.

"We won't need sleep. We're wide awake." Jasper states through a yawn. Everyone hops into the car. Cooper starts up the car as Jasper and Noah load into the back seat and Lexi hops into the passenger.

"Yeah, sure does sound like it." Cooper chuckles while brushing his dark hair out of his eye line.

"You guys sleep. Now." Lexi says while turning and sternly looking at the duo in the backseat.

Jasper groans. Noah had already passed out and was leaning against Jasper's slightly taller shoulder. "Fine, but only because I have nothing else to do." Jasper finally says, surrendering.

Lexi yawns a goodnight while Cooper starts down the road.

(Lexi's POV)

We've been driving for a good fifteen minutes and I still haven't fallen asleep. I sit up and stretch my arms a bit. I look behind me to see Jasper and Noah sleeping soundly with soft breathing.

I smile at that. That has to be the best rest they have gotten in a while.

"You should sleep too." Cooper says, never taking his eyes off the road ahead.

"I would if I could." I say through a small laugh. "Not having much luck for some reason."

I stare blankly at the open road.

"Well... you might as well make conversation. If you're just gonna sit there..." Cooper finally states.

"Hmm... okay. Question and answer time... I'll start." He hums. "Okay... why did you decide to become a police officer?"

"Oh right, that." Cooper sighed. "Well if I'm being honest, it's the only job I felt fit for."

"What do you mean but that?" I inquired.

"I have never been book smart. All throughout high school was a struggle. I knew I was physically fit and tough so I decided try and become an officer. I was almost to the badging point... until the disease broke out." He breathed.

I nod. "I guess that was convenient." He looks at me, confused. "Y'know... the whole apocalypse thing right after you get out of combat training. Kinda helpful right?"

Cooper laughs. "More than kinda."

"What were you planning to do after high school? You said you were eighteen right? So you must've been close to graduation and applying for colleges."

I ponder my thoughts. "I never really knew what I wanted to do. The only job I've ever had was at McDonald's." He laughs. "What's so funny about that?" I say in an annoyed tone.

"No, no. It's not funny. I just never imagined you working at a restaurant." I quirk up an eyebrow. "What do you see me doing as a job then?"

Cooper stays quiet for a second, I'm assuming to think about his answer.

"Hmm... maybe a caretaker. For children maybe? I don't see you taking care of old people."

"I don't know about that. Your brother seems like more of caretaker to me." Cooper gives me a confused look.

"You seriously don't see it? All he's done is take care of Noah since they met." I grinned. Cooper takes a look at the rear view mirror, glancing at the dozing boys.

"Only at the start. Noah has thankfully gotten a bit braver." Cooper sighs. "Jasper used to be a lot more hot headed before he became allies with Noah."

I giggle. "You know you can say friend right? You're always so serious."

"Whatever." Cooper says while chuckling and shoving me playfully.

We laugh with each other for a good ten seconds. Cooper's cackle lowers to a soft smile as he looks at me. I stare back and we are silent, the engine being the only thing audible.

Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye I see something hop in front of the headlights. My mouth realizes quicker then I do and yells, "Cooper! The road!"

His eyes shoot to the pavement in front of him as he quickly swerves away from what looked to be a white tailed deer.

The car spins and time seems to slow. I feel my heart drop to my stomach as I squeeze my eyes shut.

All is in motion until the front of the car slams against something.

I open my eyes a good ten seconds after the sudden impact. My face lays against an air bag. I sit up and look around the car.

"Hey *gasp* is everyone *gasp* okay?" I say through a groan. Everyone is awake now, Noah and Jasper especially freaked out because of the sudden awakening.

"I think we're all okay." Cooper grunts. "But there's a good chance that a handful of biters just heard us crash."

I look ahead of me to see that we had crashed into a power pole.

"We need to get our stuff and get out. That wire is down which means that we could be electrocuted if not careful. It also means that the car may start on fire." Cooper pants.

I quickly nod at that. "You heard him. Grab your things and Cooper will show you how to get out so you don't get hurt." They nod and follow Cooper's directions.

Time skip to about five minutes later~

(Jasper's POV)

We have been walking down this road for a good five minutes now. Ugh this is so annoying! How did Cooper even manage to crash the car, he's a great driver! I don't buy that bullshit excuse about a deer coming out of nowhere.

I hear a groan. I glance over to Noah, who is rubbing his temples at the moment. "Something wrong?" I say casually. "..oh no I should be fine. The impact of the crash kind of gave me a headache." He laughs.

"Are you sure we don't need to stop? We probably could for a bit. Or maybe you could just take some ibuprofen real quick or-"

"Jasper, I really am fine." He removes his hands from his face. "It's nothing to get all freaked out about."

I nod. Why did I get so.. what's the word? Overprotective? Yeah... he said it was a minor headache so why did I freak out?

I look forward and hear Lexi whisper to Cooper: "See? Caretaker~"

What does she mean by that? I shrug it off.

"I kinda... recognize this road..." Noah mumbles. I quirk up an eyebrow but continue to follow behind Cooper and Lexi.
