(Noah's POV)
As the black jeep pulls up beside us, I usher myself behind Jasper subconsciously. He's pretty tall so I should be hidden well.
I hear Cooper talking to the driver but my brain muffles it out. From everything that happened tonight, I have to admit that I'm a bit on edge right now. Scared, really.
I press my head against Jasper's back. He seems to flinch at the action a bit.
"You okay?" Jasper whispers. I nod, not wanting to be noticed by the driver. "You know, he knows you're there. He actually has mentioned you like five times already." Jasper laughs.
"O-oh." I stammer. "Yeah, I think he's safe. He said that he has a base nearby that he can take us. He also said we can stay for as long as we need until we head back to our camp."
I still stay planted behind him. Jasper scoffs jokingly. "C'mon, nothings gonna happen to you."
He then pulls me up beside him with a hand on my back.
"Alright, I've decided that we should let Henry here take us back to his base." Cooper says to us in a hushed voice. "If any of you get a bad feeling about this, just let me know." We all nod.
"Alrighty, the kiddos and the lovely lady can sit in the back seat. You sir, can sit in the passenger." The red headed man chuckles.
Jasper, Lexi and I load into the backseat as Cooper hops in the passenger. I sit in between Jasper and Lexi.
The man starts to drive and I relax into my seat a bit.
I hear Cooper and Henry making conversation but I block it out. I turn to Jasper to see him gushing over a stray knife he had found in the back seat. I breath a laugh. "What's so funny about me admiring this?" Jasper retorts quietly so Cooper and Henry do not get interrupted.
I shake my head. "No, it's not funny. I just thought your face looked dorky is all." I laugh.
Jasper nudges me playfully. "Whatever man. At least my face isn't dorky 24/7." I nudge him back and it becomes a full on shoving battle until I hear Lexi laugh.
I turn to her and she gives me a look. Seriously Lexi? Not now. "You guys sure do get along better than before, hmm?" She says smugly.
Jasper's face quirks in confusion. "Uh yeah... I guess so? I'm glad we're close. He's one of the main people I know will never abandon me or our group." Lexi nudges me, but still not that much or else Jasper would see. "What're you getting at?" Jasper finally questions.
"Oh it's nothing. I'm just glad Noah has you to protect him is all. You're kinda like a knight in shi-"
I nudge Lexi hard to get her to be quiet. She lets out a grunt and immediately stops talking. "Ow." She states plainly.
Even though I can't see for myself, I'm sure that my face is as red as a tomato. Why is she doing that?!
Jasper just stares blankly and goes back to looking at the knife. Did he realize what she was trying to do?!
"Guys. Henry says that the camp is just past this tree line." We all nod and hum in agreement.
(Jasper's POV)
Yeah, it's pretty obvious what Lexi was getting at. I'm not oblivious.
I put my new knife into my pocket and stare blankly ahead.
This has actually been obvious for a while now.
But I think I'll let Noah admit this too himself before he does to me.
