(Jasper's POV)
Of course the one time I bring Noah up here, trouble arrives. I grip him tightly in hopes of keeping him calm. If that person hears us, we could get in a lot of trouble.
As the engine shuts off, the passenger and driver doors both open. Two people. Let's hope they just try to steal the vehicles and don't notice the latch. I can't exactly make out their features as they walk up to our vehicles. One of the figures seems tall and broad, while the other seems shorter and more scrawny.
"Who would just leaves these vehicles parked no where near a base? Something's not adding up here." The shorter one says, sounding to be female. "You're right. Maybe a hidden base then? Where could it be?" The taller one says, seemingly male.
My mind is rattling. Don't look for a latch. Don't look for a latch. Don't look for a latch.
"Should we look for it then?" The shorter one says. A long pause. "I'm not sure if that's for the best. Even if there is some secret hidden base here, it wouldn't necessarily be safe. For all we know they could have tons of guards."
"Isn't it worth a shot? We need supplies and the car is almost out of gas. We have nothing to break the chains on the other vehicles so we are really running out of options."
"You're not wrong. Maybe a risk is... for the better. Where should we search?"
A long pause. The figures seem to rotate their bodies, looking for anywhere to start searching. "If I were to hide a base, I would put it in a place with plenty of camouflage. Let's search the forest."
Noah's figure stiffens in my arms. I need to think quick. I lean my head down to Noah's ear, speaking only quietly enough for him to hear. "Follow my lead."
I begin to slowly step backwards, trying my best to not crunch on any pine cones or branches. I never let go of Noah in the process, which makes it a bit more difficult. But us walking in sync seems like a better idea anyway. The two people hadn't made their way to the trees yet. "Let's get some weapons from the car, just in case." The male says.
My chance.
Once they go back over to their car, I turn Noah around quickly and grab his hand. Whatever noise we make wouldn't matter because we were far enough away from them now. They would just assume us to be wild animals. I begin to sprint and maneuver myself through the trees, hand in hand with Noah.
We run and run for at least five minutes, still surrounded by the forest. We continue until the trees suddenly end. All that is seen is a lake surrounded with rock and green plants. The moon's light reflects onto the water like a mirror.
"Just a little further." I reassure. I jog on the rock surrounding the lake until I get us half way around it. Just far enough so even if those people did hear us and came looking, they would never see us from here.
I slow down my pace and completely stop, turning to Noah. I expected him to be crying, or really pissed at me. But.. he wasn't. He just looked scared, and a bit tired maybe?
"Let's sit down." I say while plopping down onto the flat rock and facing the water. He nods and slowly copies my motion. I run my fingers through my messy hair.
"Noah look, I am.. so sorry. I've never seen any vehicles, biters, or anything dangerous around the hatch so I thought it would be alright. I guess luck wasn't in my favor tonight. I'm sorry for scaring you and for even bringing you up here in the first place. I shouldn't have been so reckless." I finish. I look over at him, assuming to see an unamused expression, but he just stares at me in shock.
"Why are you apologizing?" He croaks. I quirk up an eyebrow. "I don't know. Maybe because I picked the worst night to sneak out and try to make you feel better."
He situates himself better and brings his knees to his chest, all while staring at the water ahead. "You couldn't have known this would happen. Besides, it's not like I wasn't having any fun."
My eyes widen a bit. "Really?" He nods. "Of course. Before those people showed up, I was really enjoying being out of that bunker for once. Just.. you and me. And yeah, those people scared me, and they still are. Like you should seriously hear my heartbeat right now. Nonetheless, I still am enjoying myself. Really."
His face turns the slightest shade of pink. "You're really brave Noah. I remember how terrified of everything you were when we first met. And now you aren't even crying at the fact that we can't go back to the bunker right now."
"I feel like I should be crying. I'm honestly still terrified for our lives right now, but I'm liking this moment.. a lot better."
I smile at that and Noah turns his gaze back to the water. His freckles are much more visible with the moon's light shining on his face. I find myself examining his face more than intended.
He turns to face me and laughs a bit. "You know the water is probably better to stare at."
I completely ignore him. My movements think before my brain can and I close the gap between our faces. I mean, we've kissed before but this time... felt different. More meaningful? Yeah. It goes on for a few minutes.
I pulled away and turned back to the water to catch my breath, feeling surprisingly embarrassed. "Haha... fuck. Sorry." I run a hand through my hair.
"Why are you apologizing?" He mumbles.
I just shrug. "I don't know. I didn't really ask you.."
Noah sighs a bit. "You don't have to ask me every time, Jasper. We are... together after all."
I glance at him and smile at the shyness in his voice.
I decide to stand up. "Let's start heading back, okay? I'm sure they've left by now.. if they haven't found the hatch."
I hold out a hand for Noah and he takes it with a smile.
