(Noah's POV)
Jasper leads me down hallway after hallway in a jogging manor. This repeats for another five minutes. "Jasper are we getting close?" I huff.
He holds a finger up to his lips. "Yeah yeah just quiet down, we don't want to get caught."
I turn to him with a pout. "I thought you said this was 'nothing bad'. Sure doesn't seem like it.." I mumble. We start to slow down as we turn a corner. Jasper and I enter the main part of the bunker, which is where you enter and leave it.
"What are we doing here? Someone's definitely gonna see us out here like this." My eyes dart around everywhere making sure nobody was watching us.
"Noah it's okay. You may not like where this is going at first but I promise you that I've done it many times before." Jasper explains. My eyes fill with curiosity. "Just show me quick." I usher him, hoping to get out of sight before we are punished.
"Okay.. just trust me on this one." Jasper grabs my hand and starts to walk. Only he's headed straight for a wall. Well, not just a wall. The door to the exit of the bunker is on that wall too but that has nothing to do-
Wait.
"Jasper. I swear whatever you're thinking needs to go away. Don't-"
Jasper takes a look around once more before messing with the handle on the large metal door. He slowly turns the handle and the large door opens, revealing the metal ladder that leads up to the hatch. I haven't seen that since our arrival.
Jasper turns around to face me. "I'm not going to make you do this, but it'll be fun. I wont do anything risky or stupid. And as I said before, I've done this a few times before."
I feel my face scrunch up in thinking. He's done this before. "We can even come back whenever you say." He interrupts my thoughts. I contemplate that for a bit. "D-Do you have a weapon?" I stammer out.
He nods while pulling out his pocket knife. "As always. We won't cross any biters though. I never do at least."
Worry spreads across my face but I decide to wipe it away. "Alright." I walk into the door and look up towards the hatch. "But you're going first."
He chuckles and trots in as well, shutting the large door behind him. "Sure thing, Ashwell."
Short time skip~
Jasper reaches the top with me not too far behind him. He fiddles with the latch a bit and slowly opens it, letting the moonlight shine through the hatch. He manages to climb out and onto the actual ground. Jasper holds out a hand for me and I grab it, letting him pull me up as help.
We both stabilize ourselves on the grass under us. Jasper shuts the latch slowly, trying not to make much noise. I take in my surroundings while he does so.
A full moon is out, which it's light is shining across anything uncovered. Crickets are the only noise heard for miles which is actually comforting considering all I ever hear is growling or gunshots.
A gravel road is only about 30 feet away from us. The road we had drove on to get here. Motorcycles and our car are lined up beside the road, chained to metal posts so nobody can steal them.
"So what do you usually do when you're out here, Jasper?" I question as he stands up from his squat. "Nothing much. I love the fresh air and I thought you would too. It definitely helps with calming down."
Jasper begins to walk and I trot behind him with curiosity. "What have you had to calm down about?" He cocks his head towards me a bit, almost surprised at my question.
"Erm- When I had that stupid argument with Ryder. After you and I talked, I snuck out here later that night. Just needed to clear my head." I nod but continue to ask questions freely. "That was.. the same night that we snuck into the lab right?"
He hesitantly nods, stopping in his tracks. We had stopped a bit down the road, not far from the latch but not really close either. "I uh.. I snuck off after we came back to the pod that night. I just felt really guilty for making you think you had to agree with my stupid ideas all the time." He says in a disappointed way. "That's why.. I wanted to make sure that you wanted to do this for you.. not just for me." He says sheepishly.
My face heats up a bit. I've never seen him so considerate before. I give him a warm smile. "That's really.. nice. I'm glad we came out here." I decide to take a sudden interest in my muddy sneakers.
Jasper begins to walk again which makes me cock my head up. I trot beside him once again down the gravel road. It was silent, but in a comforting way, not so much awkward.
"It's kinda weird that you never see biters out here. It's pretty lucky." I giggle. He smiles at me and laughs too. "Yeah. I've never had any trouble up here so-"
Jasper stops talking and squints at the road. I quirk up an eyebrow in confusion. "Jasper-" "Shhh." He interrupts while guiding me off of the road and behind a large nearby tree. "What's-" "Listen."
I squint my eyes in concentration, trying to hear whatever Jasper was hearing. Suddenly, a noise fills my ears. Engines. Vehicles. I look at him in worry and he just holds a finger to his lips.
The vehicle's lights start to approach, which shine on the trees a bit. Jasper grabs me and pulls me behind it a bit better, helping me into a better stance. I can't help but shake in fear a bit. What does this mystery person want? What if they see us? What if-
I must've been shaking a lot because suddenly two arms wrap around my torso tightly from behind. "It's okay Noah, just try to be quiet alright?" Jasper whispers. I just nod while pressing my forehead against the tree in front of us.
The vehicle's engine shuts off suddenly, leaving no sound but the crickets' chirps. Now I really have to shut up. I hold my breath a bit and try to calm down.
A/N- A bit of a cliffhanger there 😈 we stan a protective Jasper😩 stay posted for part two of this chapter!!
