(Noah's POV)
It feels so weird to be back in our house. It's pretty risky to trust Carlos but what do we even have to lose? It's a hell of a lot safer in here then out there anyway.
I stare blankly at my paint spotted ceiling, unable to sleep. A cough exits my mouth. They never did get that medicine to me, did they? At least my sickness went away by itself. The most of it, anyway.
I decide to hop out of bed and grab a glass of water from the kitchen. The whole house is silent, which is pretty eerie to me. I flicker on the kitchen light and to my surprise, Jasper is sitting at one of the bar stools. He jumps a bit at the lights appearing suddenly.
"What are you doing awake?" He questions while sipping a glass of water. I take a seat in the bar stool next to him and he shares his glass.
"I could ask you the same thing. Why are you just drinking water in a pitch black kitchen?" I raise an eyebrow and sip at the drink. Jasper just shrugs. "I didn't want the light to wake anyone up. I guess that seems stupid now since all of the bedroom doors are shut." He chuckles.
I laugh a bit too and hand him back his water. "I couldn't really sleep either." He mumbles. My face turns a bit more sincere at that comment.
"It's just... hard to trust this place after everything that has happened." Jasper finishes. I nod tiredly, understanding where he was coming from.
After a moment, I hop off of the stool and stretch a bit. "Okay. I'm gonna go back to bed."
Jasper copies my action. "Uh- hang on."
I raise a brow and wait for him to continue. "We should... probably share a room again. Don't you think?" He shrugs. "Just because."
I smile a bit. "I don't know, Jasper. You kind of like your space messy. And I prefer the opposite." The sarcastic tone slips through my teeth.
"Yes or no?" He groans, a little impatient. A quiet laugh exits my body as I nod. "I'd never say no."
He rolls his eyes and pulls me into a kiss, which catches me off guard a bit. His arms wrap around me lightly but firmly. After a few minutes, he goes to deepen the kiss, which causes me to pull away for a moment.
"Oh."
"What?" He laughs.
"It's just... no, I was just a bit caught off guard. It's all good."
"Okay, yeah." He laughs. "I'm tired, so let's get to bed."
"Not too tired though, right?" I question as my face reddens, which causes Jasper to stop in his tracks. His face seems a bit distorted, like he's trying to solve a rubrix cube. "No, no. Not too tired. Why?"
"No I just thought maybe..." I trail off. "Never mind. Goodnight." I begin to walk towards my room. "Noah wait—"
Jasper's cut off by a noise coming from Lexi's bedroom. We glance at each other and make our way towards her door.
"I've been thinking about this for awhile now. I've never admitted this but I've been in love with you since the day I met you at the pharmacy."
Jasper and I widen our eyes and look at each other.
"I might be asking this really soon. But I can't wait any longer knowing that any day now could be our last. I know that there's no way to make this official... considering we're in an apocalypse. But I did want to ask you..."
We hear the floor creak a bit and Lexi lets out a huge gasp.
"Will you... marry me?"
I close my mouth tightly and hold in my breath for an answer.
"WHAT OF COURSE I WILL OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU!!!" Lexi squeals and she seems to jump around a bit.
Jasper and I smile at each other wildly and silently celebrate. As we walk back into the kitchen, I immediately jump around with happiness. I didn't exactly expect him to ever ask her that. It's not like they can have a real ceremony with a priest, so it seemed impossible.
Suddenly, a door creaks open from down the hall. "What are you guys doing up?" Lexi says, trying to sound serious but she still had a stupid smile on her face. Jasper and I stop instantly and contemplate if we should tell them that we heard.
Cooper peeks out the doorway too. "You guys heard everything... didn't you?" Jasper and I couldn't help but smile and nod repeatedly. Cooper rolls his eyes but still smiles. "Just don't tell Denise yet." He whispers.
Oh right, Mom. I wonder how she would react to this. After all, Lexi is only eighteen.
"We won't say a word." Jasper smirks. Cooper makes his face serious and nods. He and Lexi then head back into her room for the night.
The smile just wouldn't wipe off my face.
"Noah?" Jasper interrupts my giddiness.
"Yeah?" I tilt my head to the side. He just huffs. "Y'know... I know what you were implying earlier." He shrugs.
My face turns beet red in an instant. I was sort of hoping he would forget about it.
"I'm sorry I brought it up. I know it's probably a little weird and—"
"If it makes you feel any better, I was implying it too."
I rub the back of my neck and stare everywhere but at Jasper. "You were? When did you—"
"When I asked you to share a room again. Tonight."
"Oh."
"And please stop saying it's weird. It really isn't. I mean we've been together for a long time, after all. I'm sorry if I gave off the impression that I was weirded out. In all honesty, I was just a bit shocked. I didn't really expect you to be the one to bring it up." Jasper huffs out a nervous laugh, which surprises me a bit. Jasper. Nervous?
"Okay." I barley stammer out. There's a ping of silence before Jasper holds out his hand patiently. "It's okay if you changed your mind."
"No, no." I shake my head. "I'm okay with it. Really."
Jasper just smiles my way and takes my hand in his. As we walk back to Jasper's room, he starts another short conversation.
"You know, in some other countries, people get married at as young as sixteen." He laughs. I roll my eyes a bit. "Shut up Jasper."
His laugh turns into a slight cackle as we stand in front of his door. "Just a thought." He then opens the door.
