You're Up Early

(Cooper's POV)

I'm the calmest I've been in awhile. Since after the bunker, I was on edge... until now.

Asking Lexi was the best thing I could've done. There's no way for us to have a "formal" wedding but I think just making it official with the proposal was good enough for her.

I really do want to spend the rest of my life with her, no matter how short.

I leave Lexi asleep in her bed and slowly make my way out of her room. Shutting the door behind me, someone gets my attention.

"Don't let Denise catch ya'." Jasper teases while munching on a granola bar in the kitchen. "Aren't you up a bit early, asshat?" I retort.

He simply shrugs. "I guess so. I just couldn't really sleep after last night."

"Ah, the proposal. Yeah it's okay. I was pretty giddy too." I grin. Jasper just looks at me, dumbfounded for a moment before nodding his head quickly. "Yes. Yeah. The proposal."

This action causes me to fold my arms. "That's not what you were talking about at all, huh?"

"No no. I was I—"

"Jasper." I start.

"What?"

"Is there something you need to tell me?" I raise a brow.

"No."

"Jasper."

"God, why does it matter?" He groans and sits back on a stool. I simply lean my elbows on the counter next to him. "Well, you sound and look extremely suspicious. And I'm technically in charge of you so I should be aware of what you're—"

"Ah, okay. I get it." He rolls his eyes. "Maybe something did happen last night other than the proposal."

There's a ping of silence before it clicks in my brain. "Oh. You guys had—"

"Shh!"

"Okay, okay." I laugh the slightest bit.

It's a good five seconds of silence before I break it. "Awfully defensive about it. That bad, huh?" A quiet cackle escapes my mouth. Jasper just gives me a pissed off look. "What? No! Of course not. It was good."

"Just good?"

"Great! God, what do you want me to say? This is awkward enough as it is, Cooper."

"Okay, I'll stop. Just don't act all suspicious around Lex. I'll bet you she finds out immediately."

"Don't scare me."

"Fine, let's talk about something else. Remember to not mention anything to Denise about... last night. With Lex and I, I mean."

"What don't you want to mention to me?" A familiar voice fills the air.

Shit.

I turn around slowly with an awkward look on my face as Denise raises a questionable eyebrow at me. Fuck fuck fuck.

The air is silent before a door down the hall creaks open. "Morning everyone." Lexi yawns and trots into the kitchen.

She looks at me and her mother in a confused manor. "What's going on?"

Denise bites the inside of her mouth. "Is there something you need to tell me?" She asks, never taking her eyes off me.

Lexi shoots me a look with wide eyes but soon sighs. "Well actually, yes. We were going to wait a bit longer to say but..."

The air is silent for a hot second.
