Biter Hunting

(Cooper's POV)

"Ughhhh owwww."

Lexi.

I roll over and tiredly look at Lexi's bed, which she sits upon while rubbing her temples. I roll my eyes simply at the fact that I'm gonna have to deal with her fucking hangover all day.

"Good morning to you too." I say rather groggily. Lexi shoots me a death stare before going back to mumbling about God knows what.

"Lexi can you please shut the fuck up already." I hear an annoyed Jasper say. I make a 'pfft' noise at his ignorance. Lexi buries her head into her pillow and groans some more.

After a few minutes of listening to her, Noah trots in with a glass of water and two pills. He sets them on her night stand and taps her shoulder. Lexi glances up in the most irritated way possible. "Take these pills and the whole glass of water and your headache should go down a bit. Please quiet the hell down." He says in a bored tone. Noah walks away before Lexi can make angry eye contact.

She stays quiet and takes the pills silently. I sigh in relief and lay my head back down on my pillow, resting my eyes. The silence is only brief though, as an alarm wails across the room and seemingly the whole bunker.

"What is that?" Jasper covers his ears. I hop out of bed and walk to the pod's door, opening it. My eyes land on many people with guns marching in formation down the hall past our door.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Denise. I wave my arm and she thankfully notices. "What's going on?"

Denise approaches the door. "The disease control lab seems to of had an incident." Just as I was about to speak, I feel a hand on my shoulder.

Lexi finally decided to get up. "What incident?" She yawns. "The scientists have some 'classified' research that apparently was tampered with, at least last night."

"Okay I'm still confused, why are these loud ass sirens wailing if just a bit of research was tampered with?" I shout over the commotion.

Denise steps inside our pod and shuts the door. "I probably shouldn't be telling you this but I think you deserve to know. The scientists have been trying out many antidotes on infected people-"

"Biters." I interrupt.

"Yes. Well of course not every antidote has really worked per say, so there have been a few mutations between subjects."

"What does that mean?" Lexi questions.

"In simple terms, one of the possible antidotes mutated one of the 'biters' and they had it in a hyper sleep so it wouldn't cause harm to the rest of this community. They have a theory that someone snuck in last night and scared the creature awake because... it has broken out of its encasement."

Lexi and I stare in awe. "That's why you must stay here until it's caught-"

"We can help. Let us help." Lexi pleads. Denise gives a defeated look, one that says "I don't feel like arguing with my daughter right now."

"Alright alright, the boys have to stay here though. Cooper, keep a close eye on her."

"He's never had much of a problem with that." Jasper snickers. I shoot him a death stare before Lexi and I trot inside to get dressed.

Time skip~

Some security guy tells me and Lexi where it's best to look and he also hands us a walkie talkie. "You have everything you need. Just remember, if you see it.. don't shoot it. Call for backup so we can get it back into the lab."

We both nod and trot away, weapons in hand. "It's odd that they would want to keep it alive, right? I mean if the antidote didn't work then they should try it on another biter." Lexi rambles.

"I've been thinking the same thing... I'm sure they have a weird science-y explanation for it though, so let's keep looking."

Lexi and nods and we continue searching. We walk into a seemingly dark corridor and make small talk while keeping our eyes ahead and guns pointed.

"I honestly can't remember much from the party last night... did I totally embarrass myself?" She laughs sheepishly.

I chuckle and smirk. "You weren't too bad. Getting you back to the pod was the worst part. I had to literally carry you."

"Geez.." She groans. We walk a bit longer in silence and I decide to bring up something Lexi clearly doesn't want to talk about.

"So... about the uh.. babysitting incident." I begin. Her eyes shoot to me and she instantly starts speaking. "Oh! Yeah that was a great experience! It's great we volunteered! And that diaper, pshh it was a breeze! So much easier to change than I thought! Yeah it was fine-"

"Lexi you know what I'm talking about." I stop in my tracks. She stops as well but plays with her hands more. "I know..."

I scratch the back of my head. "If you felt uncomfortable, I get it. I didn't mean to get so close to you. I'm not saying I hated it or anything, just that I understand. We can drop it."

Her eyes go wide. "Drop.. it?" I turn my head to her. "Uh yeah.. if that's what you want."

"That isn't what I want." Lexi mumbles. "I uh... I didn't mind you being so close."

I raise an eyebrow in surprise. "Really?"

"Yeah-"

All of a sudden, a large amount of force is shoved into me. Lexi. We both land against the wall and groan. Looking up, we see quite the creature. It's much taller than an average biter and seems to have claws and teeth sharper than Jasper's knife when he's bored.

"Lexi get up, now. We need to move." I force myself up and look down. No movement.

"Lexi?!" I say louder than expected. I notice the back of her shirt is ripped all the way down and blood starts to pour.

I loud roar comes from the biter's mouth and I panic as he charges at us. I don't think, I just do. I aim my gun up and pull the trigger.

Boom.

The biter falls backwards, only a few inches from Lexi and I, oozing blood from its chest.

Suddenly, security and scientists enter the corridor. "What the hell did you do?!" Shouts a scientist. My eyebrows crease. "I was saving our asses! That thing would've killed us-"

Lexi.

I lower myself to her quickly. "We need help over here! Now! She's bleeding!" I holler. Many people come over and a few nurses show up five minutes later to take her to the medical ward.

Lexi is just carried away on a stretcher at full speed. Scientists continue to yell and shout at me as Lexi fades from my view.
