The next few weeks were challenging, since I was extremely emotional. I was officially in the second trimester of my pregnancy, which was a huge relief.
I've been working my last shifts at the hospital which was heartbreaking. Sophia was super understanding about me quitting but was suspicious considering I couldn't give her a good reason to quit.
Today was my last day at the job so I was feeling extremely emotional all day. I was finishing up with my last patient when I got a page to go to Sophia's office. I could feel the nerves fluttering in my stomach as I packed up the cart and went to go put it away so I could go to her office.
I knew she wasn't going to yell at me but I knew she was going to make me cry. Sophia was always so supportive towards me and anything I wanted. She was a mentor to me and was like an older sister.
I didn't know what I would do without her.
When I walked into her office I could already feel the tears welling in my eyes. "Hi, Sophia." I said quietly as I sat across from her. "Hi, Violet. How are you feeling?" She asked as I caught a tear that was about to fall down my cheek. "I'm okay...I'm so sorry for letting you down." I said and sniffled, biting my lip.
"You're not letting me down, Violet. Why would you say that?" She asked as I looked away, trying to push down the emotions. "You promoted me and had faith in me and all I do is let you down." I whispered.
"No, Violet. You have been nothing but amazing. I've seen you go through challenges and get back up with no issues. I don't know what is going on and why you are quitting, but I know that I'm proud of you." She said as I looked down at my ring, crying.
"You've been an amazing part of our team and I want you to know that although this may be the end for now...you're always welcome to come back." She said as I shook my head. "You don't have to do that." I said and looked up. "I know, but I don't think you know how amazing you are at this job." She said as I smiled.
"When you're ready, you know where to find me." She said then stood up. "Thank you for everything." I said and stood up so I could hug her. "Let me know if you need anything." She said then hugged me, rubbing my back in a motherly way. "I will, thank you again." I said then rubbed my hands on my pants and turned to leave the room.
When I got to the locker room, Aisha was standing there with a cupcake in her hands "Aisha..." I whined as she came over to hug me. "I'm gonna miss you, V." She said as I pouted my lip out. "I'll miss you too..you have my number though. I'm always a text away." I said then held my pinky out to her.
"Love you, V." She said then linked her pinky through mine. "Love you, too." I said with a smile then turned to grab my stuff. "I guess this is it." I said with a sigh as she handed me the cupcake in her hand. "You'll be back." She said with a laugh. "Maybe." I said with a sigh then grabbed my keys.
"Thanks for everything." I said and hugged Aisha one more time. "No, thank you." She said then let go. I said my last goodbyes to everyone else then made my way to the car.
I could feel the emotions boiling over as I sat in the driver's seat. I knew I had to get home because Colby and I were flying to Ohio tonight but I wasn't in any state to be driving. I decided to call Colby so he could calm me down.
"Hey- oh...baby." Colby answered as I sobbed into the steering wheel. "Hormones!" I cried out as he breathed a laugh. "I know, V. Just take a deep breath." He said quietly as I took a deep breath. "This is for the better." I said and wiped my eyes.
"It is, plus you can always get back into it. You just have to take care of yourself and our baby right now." He said quietly as I started the car. "Yeah, everyone was just so nice about me leaving." I said with a frown.
"They love you and they want the best for you." He said as I started driving home. "Don't make cry again, Colby." I said as he breathed a laugh. "Sorry, are you on your way home?" He asked as I nodded. "Yeah, I'll be home in ten." I said and focused on the road.
"Okay, I have dinner ready for you since we have to leave kinda soonish." He said as I nodded. "Perfect. I can sleep on the plane." I said as he chuckled. "Sounds good, baby. I'll see you when you get home." He said as I nodded. "I'll see you soon." I said then hung up.
I drove home then went inside. I could hear Colby in the kitchen so I went in there. "Hey, babe. This looks good!" I said and pointed to the bowl of mac and cheese. "Thank you, having a wife that's an amazing chef has really rubbed off on me." He said as I walked over and kissed his cheek.
"Thank you for this." I said with a smile then sat down to eat. "I'm gonna load the car up." Colby said as I nodded. "Okay, I'll scarf this down and get changed. Then I'll be ready." I said with a small smile.
"Sounds good." He said then kissed my head and went to go get our bags so he could bring them to the car. I quickly ate then did my dishes before going upstairs to get changed. I was so excited that we were going to Ohio since I haven't been back in years.
I got the go ahead to fly at my 14 week appointment a couple days ago. Amy said that the baby was growing nicely and that she was able to tell the gender of the baby. Colby and I chose to wait until she was 100% certain as to what it was. We also wanted to wait until we announced that I was pregnant.
It was still so surreal how quickly this pregnancy was going. I knew that I still had a long way to go but it was really becoming real, knowing that we were in the second trimester.
We were going to stop at Colby's parents house on the way back from Ohio so we could tell them that we were expecting. We wanted them to be the first people to know. When we got back from our trip we would tell everyone else.
I wasn't necessarily ready to tell people yet, but I had promised Colby that we could because he was so excited. I was trying to get the courage up to open my heart to him about the battle that was raging on in my mind.
Maybe I would be able to after visiting my parents.
"Ready to go?" Colby asked as I walked out of the house wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt. "Ready!" I said with a smile and went over to the car. "Let's go then." He said with a grin then got in the car.
It took us an hour or so to get to the airport but we were still making good time. I was feeling the exhaustion starting to hit me again as we walked towards security. "I'm afraid I'm gonna pass out." I said quietly as Colby looked at me with concern.
"Can you make it through security?" He asked as I nodded. "Yeah, I'm just really tired. I was really tired last time.." I said as he nodded. "It's okay. I'll get you some water and you can rest on the plane. You're not gonna pass out." He reassured and took my hand squeezing it gently.
I nodded then took a deep breath as we waited in line for security. Luckily it was going by pretty fast so we were able to get to our gate with plenty of time.
"Wait here, I'm gonna get you a water bottle." Colby said as I nodded with a smile and put my hand on my belly. I sat there for a couple minutes, focusing on staying awake. Colby came back just in time for them to start boarding the plane. "I'll drink it on the plane. Let's go." I said and grabbed the bottle from him as he grabbed our bags.
When we boarded the plane we found our seats and sat down. "We made it." I said with a sigh and unscrewed the cap of my water bottle. "Way to go." Colby said with a grin and held his hand up so I could give him a high five.
"I'm proud of us." I said and gently patted my belly then scrunched my nose at Colby. "I am, too. Now please get some rest so you don't pass out when we get to Ohio." He said as I nodded. "You got it." I said then drank some water before resting on his shoulder.
I was so excited that when I woke up I would be in Ohio. I was going to be away from all the stress of LA, which was gonna be good for me and good for the baby.
It was gonna be a great weekend.
