"I come with babies!" Amy said as she came in with two little bassinets.
Today was the day that Nova and Luna were able to stay with us. They have been in the NICU for almost a week, and they were finally stable enough to be with us.
I was so excited to actually be able to care for them since I haven't felt like much of a mom.
"Hi, sweethearts." I said with a wide smile as I opened my arms. "They're ready for mommy and daddy snuggles. I recommend skin to skin contact as much as possible." Amy said as she pulled Nova out of her crib then laid her on my chest.
"They've been on formula but I want to try and get them on your milk as soon as possible." Amy said as I nodded.
"They've had me pump a couple times but they donated my milk to other moms in the hospital since the girls were on formula." I explained as she nodded.
"Okay, so you aren't going in totally blind which is good. When they start getting fussy, call me in and I'll show you the ropes." Amy said as Colby pulled Luna out of her crib and held her on his bare chest.
"Okay." I said and rubbed my hand along Nova's back as she leaned her head on my chest. Amy smiled at us then left the room.
"Hi, Nova." I cooed and kissed her head. "I can't get over how damn cute they are." Colby said as I smiled.
"Me neither." I said quietly then reached up and pulled Nova's hat back so I could look at her hair.
She had thick black hair which was curling ever so slightly. "Does Luna have dark hair, too?" I asked and looked over at Colby. "Yeah, I wonder if it will get lighter." He said as I shrugged. "I have pretty dark hair and so do you." I said as Nova fussed in my arms.
"Shhhh..it's okay." I said quietly as the door opened. "Oh my god..." Kat whispered as she and Sam came in. "Luna, it's time to meet your Aunt Kat and Uncle Sam." Colby said quietly as I laughed.
"Ew..Uncle Sam." I said as I rubbed circles into Nova's back. "Can we call him Uncle Sammy instead, that's cuter." Kat said as I nodded. "I agree. Now, who wants to hold Nova?" I asked and looked up at them.
"Me!" Kat said with a smile as I lifted Nova carefully off of my chest and carefully placed her in Kat's arms. "Oh my god! I love her so much." Kat said as I smiled at her. "She's so small! I'm obsessed." She said as Colby handed Luna off to Sam.
They visited with the girls for a while before Colby's parents came into the room. "Oh! They're in here!" Colby's dad said as I nodded. "They were brought in this morning." I said with a smile as Sam and Kat handed the babies off to Colby's parents.
"Look at those cheeks! Those are Colby cheeks." Colby's mom said as I smiled and reached for my water. "They have Violet's nose though." Colby said as I nodded. "For sure." Kat said with a smile as Luna started crying.
"You hungry, pumpkin?" I asked as Colby's dad walked her over to me. "I bet you're hungry." I said and pushed the call button as he laid her in my arms. I bounced her in my arms slightly, trying to calm her down.
"It's okay, honey." I whispered as Amy came into the room. "There's that cry. I give it three seconds before Nova starts crying." She said then came over so she could help me feed Luna.
As soon as she walked over, Nova started crying. "On cue." I said with a laugh as Colby took Nova from his mom. "Okay, we're gonna set Luna up then we can have Nova join in on the fun." Amy explained as she helped undo my gown as Sam, Kat, and Colby's parents went to the other side of the room.
"I feed them together?" I asked as she nodded. "I suggest that, just because they are identical and having them on the same schedule will just be easier for you." She explained then positioned Luna to be in line with my breast.
"Okay, it's gonna feel a little weird." She said as Luna latched on. "Oh..." I whispered as I looked up at Colby.
"Feel weird?" He asked as I nodded. "SO weird." I said with a laugh as Amy grabbed Nova from him. She was still crying loudly as Amy positioned her in my other arm and with my other breast.
As soon as Nova latched on my jaw dropped. "This is oddly amazing." I said as Colby grinned at me. "You're amazing." He said as I scrunched my nose at him.
"I feel like a pig." I said with a laugh as Amy scrunched her brow. "A pig?" He asked as I looked down at the girls. "Yeah, with like..teets." I said as Colby chuckled. "You're such a dork." He said as I nodded and snorted like a pig.
The girls ate for a couple minutes before they both pulled away. "Okay, so now we have to burp them. Colby, grab a baby." She said as he laughed then grabbed Nova from me.
"Just lay them over your shoulder, then pat their backs gently until they burp." Amy said as we did what we were told.
"Congratulations. You've fed your babies for the first time." She said as I smiled. "Woo! Look at us!" I said with a smile.
"You can also pump and get a bottle so Colby can feed one while you feed the other with your breast." Amy explained as I nodded and patted Luna's back until she burped.
"Thanks for your help. I don't know what we're gonna do when we get home and don't have you to show us the ropes." I said as she chuckled. "You'll be okay. I think you two are lovely parents already." She said as I snuggled Luna against my chest again.
"I think we're doing great." Colby said with a laugh. "You are!" Colby's mom called out as I laughed. "Thanks, mom." Colby said and grinned at her.
We hung out for a little while before everyone left us alone again.
"You should take a nap, V. You look exhausted." He said as I sighed. "I don't want to miss anything." I said as he laughed and leaned over to kiss my head. "I'll wake you if anything happens. The girls are taking a nap too." He said as I nodded.
"What will you do?" I asked with a yawn. "I'll order us some food and get some work done. Maybe some friends can come visit tonight." He said as he took Nova from me so he could lay her in her bed.
"Okay.." I said as I settled into the bed. "I wish we were home." I said quietly as he kissed both Nova and Luna. "Me too. Hopefully we can be home soon." He said as I nodded. "I miss your cuddles." I said as he smirked.
"I miss sex with you." He said as I laughed and pulled the blankets over my shoulder.
"My vagina is so shredded it's gonna be a while." I said as he shrugged. "I'll wait, but I don't know if there's a point in waiting because I'm just gonna shred it again." He said as I laughed.
"Stop it, horny." I said then wiggled my finger, gesturing for him to come closer so I could kiss him. "I love you." He said then kissed me.
"I love you, too. I expect to wake up to pizza." I said as he grinned. "Pizza it is." He said then kissed my forehead and turned to go sit on the couch.
I only was able to sleep for about an hour before I woke up to the babies crying. "What's going on?" I asked and sat up slowly. "They need to be changed." Colby said as I nodded and carefully got out of the bed.
"Lay down, V...I don't want you to get hurt." He said as I shook my head. "I'm fine. I'm just gonna be careful. I don't like seeing the babies sad." I said then grabbed a diaper and some wipes.
"Okay, I'm only allowing it because I need help." He said as I laughed and undid the little onesie that Nova was wearing. I carefully changed her diaper then looked over at Colby.
"God, you're so hot." He said as I laughed. "Focus, Brock." I said then pointed to Luna as she cried. I scooped Nova in my arms and bounced her gently as Colby repeated exactly what I did but with Luna.
"We did good." I said with a smile as Colby scooped Luna up and held her as he rocked back and forth. "Yeah, I'm really proud of us." He said then leaned over and gave me a kiss.
I felt my heart flutter as I thought about how well Colby and I were doing with being new parents. I knew the true test would come when we went home and did all of this alone but it didn't matter.
I was really proud of us.
