"What would you guys like for dinner?" I asked as I stood up. "Actually, we thought that we would cook for you guys tonight." Colby's mom said with a smile. "You don't have to do that." I said as she nodded.
"I know, but we want to." She said then smack Colby's dad's arm. "Come on, Layne." She said then stood up and led the way to the kitchen.
"They're stubborn just like you." I said to Colby as I looked over at him. "Yeah, where do you think I got it from?" He asked as crying sounded from the baby monitor. "Shit." I mumbled then turned to go towards the stairs.
When we got upstairs we walked into the nursery to see Luna screaming loudly. "Oh, angel." I said with a frown as I pulled her out of her crib. "Oh, god...she's really warm." I said and looked at Colby as he pulled Nova out of her crib since she was now awake from the commotion.
"Do you think we need to take her to the hospital?" Colby asked as I rocked Luna. "I don't think that's necessary. I think she's either just really uncomfortable or she's hungry...I just don't want her to throw up." I said as Luna cried and looked up at me.
"I'm sorry I'm bad at this." I whispered as my eyes welled with tears. I knew that I was expected to be perfect since I have only been a mom for a couple months but it was still killing me that I didn't know how to help her.
"Can you bring Nova downstairs so she can hang out with your parents? I think we should give Luna a cold bath." I said as Colby nodded. "Good plan." He said then turned to leave the room so we could bring Nova downstairs.
"I know you're feeling sick, my love. Daddy and I will take care of you though." I said and brought her to the changing table so I could get her undressed. I could tell she wasn't feeling well because she was still fussing.
"I know, love." I said then lifted her up and made my way to the bathroom. When I got in there I filled the tub up with water that was mostly cold but was warm enough for Luna and I to sit in it.
"How's she doing?" Colby asked as I carefully got in the tub. "She's just really fussy. We might need to give her some more medicine...or she might need to try and eat, I don't know." I said, feeling a little flustered.
"How about we try feeding her and if she throws it up then we'll see if she needs more medicine." Colby said as I nodded. "Good plan." I said then took a deep breath.
We spent the next twenty minutes or so getting Luna cooled down in the bath. I decided to feed her while she was in the bath to see if she was able to keep the milk down.
"I'm gonna go get her changed." Colby said as he pulled her into his arms. "Okay, I'm gonna get changed then go down to check on Nova and your parents." I said then stood up and grabbed a towel. "Sounds good. Come on, sweetheart." Colby said to Luna then walked out of the room.
I got out of the tub then went into the closet so I could get changed. Once I was done with that I went downstairs and went straight to the kitchen.
"How's it going in here?" I asked as Nova cooed loudly, reaching for me. "Hi!" I said happy as Colby's dad handed her off. "It's great! We're making breakfast for dinner." Colby's mom said as I smiled.
"That sounds amazing right now." I said as Colby came into the room with Luna in his arms. "I think the milk helped, V." He said as I smiled and looked over at them. Luna was smiling slightly as she looked around the room.
"That's good." I said with a smile then sat down at the island, holding Nova in my arms. "She looks much better already." Colby's mom said as she made some pancakes. "She's a tough girl." I said then looked down at Nova. "And so is this girl." I said and caressed her cheek as she smiled at me.
I was so glad to be back with the girls even though we were only gone for a couple days. It just made me want to bring them to Ohio with us even more. I knew it wasn't the greatest idea considering how long of a flight it was and how stressed out they could get from that but I didn't know if I had it in me to leave them again.
I would just have to talk to Colby about it.
We spent the rest of the night finishing dinner then eating it before going to bed. Colby's parents had to be at the airport early in the morning so we decided to go to bed kinda early.
I was grateful for that because Colby and I were still running off of only 3 hours of sleep so we were exhausted. When we got upstairs we brought the girls to bed then went into our room.
"I know we are exhausted but I won't be able to sleep until we figure out this Ohio thing." I said with a sigh as I pulled on a big t-shirt. "What about it?" Colby asked as he pulled his shirt off and got in bed.
"Are we bringing the girls? I don't know if I can leave them again." I said with a sigh as I crawled into bed. "We won't have to decide for a week but would you rather bring them on the plane ride?" He asked and wrapped his arms around me.
"I don't think so. I also don't think I want them there when I go to the crash scene.." I said quietly as I rested my head on his chest. "I just wish I didn't worry so much." I said and looked up at him.
"You're a mother, V. Of course you're going to be worried about the girls, especially when you're across the country from them." Colby said as I sighed. "It'll be okay. I'll just have to call them every day. It'll be okay." I said as he kissed my head.
"You're sure?" He asked as I yawned. "Yeah, we won't be gone for too long will we?" I asked as he shrugged. "Maybe four days total." He said as I nodded. "They'll be okay. I hope we can find someone to watch them though." I said and snuggled into his chest.
"We will. I know my parents are probably going to say yes when they say goodbye tomorrow." Colby said as I giggled. "So you're saying they're in denial?" I asked as he nodded. "Absolutely. They're never gonna want to leave them." He said as I nodded.
"I get that all too well." I said then sighed. "I know, baby. We won't leave for a couple days though so we have some time." Colby said then kissed my head again. "Yeah, sorry for being so annoying." I said as he breathed a laugh.
"You're not annoying. You're worried and sleep deprived which is a recipe for overthinking." He said and scratched my back. "You're right. We can talk about this more when I'm more sane." I said with a laugh then reached over and turned off the light.
"Okay, goodnight baby." Colby said as I sighed with content. "Goodnight, babe." I said then closed my eyes, falling asleep a few minutes later.
I was woken up hours later to Colby nudging me. "Baby..." He whispered as I cracked my eyes open. "Hmm." I groaned as he breathed a laugh. "My parents are leaving." He said as I yawned. "Okay, I'll be up in a minute." I said then rubbed my eyes.
"Are the girls okay?" I asked as I sat up. "Yeah, my parents are saying goodbye to them right now. Luna is feeling a bit better I think." He explained as I nodded. "That's good. Has Nova caught it yet?" I asked as he laughed. "Not that I know of." He said as I nodded and got up.
I quickly went to get ready then went into the nursery where Colby's parents were. They were holding each of the girls giving them cuddles.
"Are you sure you want to leave them?" I asked as we walked into the room. "No, but I'm sure we are going to see them next week." Colby's mom said as Colby laughed. "Told you." He said as his dad squinted at him.
"Told her what?" He asked as I giggled. "He said you would agree to watching them before you left today." I explained as Colby's mom laughed. "He knows us too well, Layne." She said and bounced Nova in her arms.
"I mean we have talked about kidnapping the girls like a hundred times." Colby's dad said as we laughed. "Yeah, maybe that was a dead giveaway." Colby said as I nodded.
We ended up sitting around for a little while before saying our goodbyes. Seeing Colby's parents though always made me really miss my own parents. I was started to get excited that I would be hopefully seeing them and using my clairvoyance to talk to them, but I was also really nervous.
I just didn't want to be disappointed.
