"I'm home!"
My voice echoed through the foyer, followed by dad closing the door. I hung my jacket on the wall, then kicked off my shoes.
"Your favourite sister is back!"
"Bina, your shoes." Dad pointed out with a sigh and J looked at my shoes which were scattered across the floor.
"Oh, right... sorry."
I put my shoes neatly by the wall before I looked at dad who was rubbing his forehead with his thumb and index finger while walking up the stairs.
Something's odd.
"Dad!" I called which caused him to stop on the stairs and turn to look at me.
"Yes, darling?"
"Are you alright?"
A smile spread across his face.
"Of course I am, sweetheart. Go say hi to Alec. Mia and Eli are arriving just before dinner."
He continued up the stairs while I moved my way to the living room that Alec loved sitting in.
My brother was sitting where he always sat, in the corner of the sofa, talking to someone over FaceTime on his phone.
"Hello dearest brother of mine." I grinned, resting my hand on the sofa.
He looked up at me and his expression dropped.
"What the fuck did you do to your hair?"
"What?" I frowned, running my fingers though it. "You don't like it? I cut it a few days ago — or... Adriana did. Dad didn't even notice."
"Well, dad doesn't notice shit." Alec said. "Talking about shit... that's what you look like."
Thanks.
"Mate, is that your sister?" One of his friends asked, and Alec simply hummed in response. "The hot one?"
"Gross!" Alec hung up the phone, throwing it on the sofa before looking at me again. "Welcome home. Now you can help mum at the newspaper so I don't have to."
I rolled my eyes.
"I hate you. You know that?"
"Of course." He grinned in satisfaction, leaning back against the corner of the sofa.
I dragged my finger around in circles on the fabric of the sofa. I couldn't stop thinking about dad hanging up on mum like that. Especially because he's never do that. They love each other more than anything.
"Alright, what's wrong?" Alec sighed. "Does the guy you like not like you back or something?"
My head snapped up and my eyes landed on him.
Right... a guy...
"Do you know what's going on with mum and dad?" I asked. "He kept hanging up on her in the car."
Alec held out his hand before a banana came flying from the kitchen, landing in his hand and I frowned, watching as he peeled it.
"They've been fighting quite a lot lately." He said. "Mostly at night when they think I'm sleeping, which is weird. I'm twenty-one... I think I can handle hearing my parents fight."
I grabbed a pillow and threw it at Alec, though he raised his hand and made it stop midair before it fell to the sofa.
Alec has mastered wandless magic and he absolutely loves to show off.
"What're they fighting about?" I asked.
"I don't know, Bree." He shrugged. "My bet is that one of them cheated."
