Allie

The door slammed shut behind me as I returned after the meeting at the newspaper. I pushed off my shoes, sighing.

I was tired and my entire body ached, especially my feet.

The house was quiet — Sabrina was probably asleep and Alec was most likely just in his room.

I located George asleep in the study room, his head resting against the bunch of paperwork on the desk.

I stopped in the doorway, smiling weakly at the sight before walking closer to him.

I slid my hand under his cheek, gently lifting his head up so I could slide the paperwork away.

"There you go, my love." I whispered before I summoned the chair in the corner, transforming it into a pillow before sliding it underneath his head and removed my hand.

I ran my fingers through his hair and leaned down to press a kiss to his head.

After sorting his papers, I placed them neatly in a corner of the desk, then left the office to walk up the stairs.

I pulled off the blazer I was wearing, walking into me and George's room to throw it on the bed before I continued down the hallway towards Sabrina's room.

Her door was already opened so I simply leaned against the doorway, smiling. She laid on her stomach in her bed, cuddled up with a stuffed animal under the duvet, her cheek squished against the pillow.

She had an empty glass on her nightstand that I walked over to grab before leaving the room again.

I continued to Alec's room and knocked on the door before opening it.

My son sat on his bed, against the headboard, his phone pressed to his ear. He looked at me and raised his eyebrows in question.

"You're still up, huh?" I asked. "Both your dad and sister are out cold."

"I'm talking to Sarah."

I nodded.

"Okay... we'll I'll probably start to get ready for bed soon. You should get some sleep, Alec. You look tired."

Alec simply hummed.

"Night mum."

"Night baby." I smiled, closing the door again. I walked back down the hallway and down the stairs.

I walked back to the study to check on George, but now he was awake, and running his hands through his hair as he yawned.

"Good." I said. "Get upstairs in bed before you fall asleep again."

George looked at me as he stretched his arms, smiling at me.

"When did you get home?"

"Just now." I shrugged, folding my arms over my chest as I leaned against the doorway. "How did it go today? Did Sabrina get the answers she needed from Emmanuel?"

He sighed and shook his head while he ran a hand to the nape of his neck, rubbing his skin.

"He didn't show."

"What?" My expression dropped. "Seriously?"

George pulled himself out of the chair and approached me slowly.

"No explanation, no nothing. I tried to call him but his number is suddenly unavailable."

"He changed his number?" I asked. "Fuck... what did Bree say?"

George wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer and I placed my hands against his chest while looking up at him.

"She doesn't know he changed his number just to avoid giving her an explanation." He sighed. "But... I don't know, Allie. I can't imagine how heartbreaking that was for her. She sat at that cafe for over an hour, waiting for him and he didn't show. She texted me and I bought her some chips and then we left when she finished them."
