Sabrina

"I cannot start to express how disappointed I am in you." Dad was the one speaking, while mum simply sat in the armchair. "Sabrina... and Naomi? What won't your grandparents think?"

Naomi looked up at my dad.

"Oh, please don't call them." She said. "I'm of age, they don't have a right to know!"

Dad sighed.

"I'm not going to call your grandparents." He assured her. "Why don't you go wait for Sabrina in her room?"

Naomi looked at me and I gave a nod of reassurance before she got up to leave the basement.

"You're welcome to stay for dinner." Mum told her and offered her a smile before Naomi walked upstairs.

Then the attention was back on me while Eli sat nervously next to me, chewing on his nails.

"I understand wanting to try weed once, but in our house, knowing how much we dislike it. And coke?! What the hell are you thinking?!"

"I—" I narrowed my eyes before I looked at Eli who just casually shrugged. "—you told them? You promised!"

"It just sort of slipped!" He defended himself. "You smoked my weed, Sabrina! You owe me a lot of money!"

"I don't owe you shit!"

Mum stood up, walked over and gestured for me to move over, before she sat down between Eli and I to stop us from fighting.

It was something she did when we were kids.

"Why don't you listen to your father before you start accusing each other?"

Folding my arms over my chest, I looked up at my dad. He was absolutely fuming while mum just seemed to be tired.

"When was this?" Dad asked. "Recently?"

I looked at him for a moment before sighing and shaking my head.

"A few years ago... I don't know."

"And how many is a few?"

I bit down on my lip, not wanting to answer and then dad turned to look at Eli.

Eli was horrible at lying. If he was pressured, he spilled everything, and right now was no different.

"It was four years ago." He sighed. "We were both at Hogwarts."

"You were—" Dad ran a hand over his mouth and looked at me again, then closed his eyes and sighed. "...you did cocaine when you were fourteen years old."

"It was at this Gryffindor party and I just wanted to try but it hurt and I regretted it. I panicked and I just... I went to Eli and he helped me." I said. "I didn't realise he'd snitch on me all of these years later..."

Dad shook his head and mum got off the sofa, leaving the basement without saying anything.

Then dad sighed.

"Why is it such a big deal?" I asked and sat up straight. "I tried coke once. I've smoked weed once. I'm eighteen years old for fuck sake! I am sorry that I did it in your house but I'm not this little girl anymore!"

Dad let out a laugh, then pulled over the ottoman and sat down on it, in front of me.

"When your mother was around your age, she had to watch her best friend, someone she consider a brother, overdose from taking too much drugs." He said, his voice so calm that I knew this was the angriest he had ever been with me. "She watched him smoke throughout the school years, then found out that he had a problem and after school, he overdosed twice. He relapsed loads of times — even after going to rehab for months. He couldn't get through his wedding day, without snorting a line of coke, so that Sabrina, is why you smoking a little bit of weed is such a big deal to me and to your mother. We've tried everything to keep you kids from shit like that, yet Alec overdosed, Eli's selling drugs and you are now experimenting with it."

I stared at my dad, unable to say anything. Then I felt Eli move.

"Are you talking about Marco?" He asked. "Uncle Marco?"

Dad didn't answer. He glanced at Eli before he stood up.

"Your mother has been through a lot in her life, especially when she was young and even with a lot of therapy, she hasn't been able to process most things. Some things will always be a burden for her. She used to have nightmares and they returned the second we adopted Alec. She is terrified that anything will happen to one of you so do me and your mum a favour and stop experimenting with drugs. That goes for you as well Eli."

Dad turned to follow after mum, and Eli and I stayed on the sofa, but of us lost for words.

"Uncle Marco was addicted to drugs..." I muttered to myself, staring into the room. "Did you know that?"

"No, of course I didn't." Eli scoffed. "Otherwise I wouldn't have asked."

He stood up and paced around the room for a while while I just sat there.

"Did you see the look on mum's face?" He then decided to ask. "She wasn't disappointed. She was terrified, and with what dad was saying... you scared the shit out of her, Sabrina!"

My eyes widened and I turned in my seat to look at him.

"I did?" I let out a laugh. "It was your drugs!"

"And you did them! In her fucking basement!"

"I didn't think it would be that bad!"

"No, exactly." Eli nodded. "You didn't think! Like you never fucking do! You weren't thinking when you did cocaine, you weren't thinking when you walked into knockturn alley and got yourself surrounded by Alec's dumb friends, you weren't thinking when you snogged James' girlfriend at dads work and you weren't thinking when you decided to smoke my weed in mum and dads basement! You never fucking think, and I don't know why that is. Why are you and Alec so fucking attention seeking? Is it because you're adopted and Mia and I aren't?!"

My eyes widened slightly and I pushed myself off the sofa.

"Woah... okay, then. Jumping straight to the fact that you share DNA with this family, and I don't." I said, nodding. "Got it. I'll be going then, because I can't bare to listen to you for another second."

I hurried out of the basement, slamming the door behind me before rushing upstairs to where Naomi was waiting for me in my room.

"Am I reckless?" I asked as she looked at me from where she sat on the bed.

Naomi nodded.

"A little." She said, and I sighed, leaning back against the door. "But that's one of the things I like about you. You're reckless and it's always fun with you."

I sighed again, moving over to drop myself onto the bed.

"I can't wait for New Years to pass so we can get back to school."

Naomi placed her hand on my back and I turned my head to look at her.

"What happened?" She asked softly. "Are you okay?"

I groaned and shook my head.

"I'm adopted."

Naomi chuckled.

"Well, you knew that."

"Yeah but that doesn't make it less annoying." I said. "My biological parents hates me. My brother probably doesn't see me as an actual member of the family and apparently I scared the shit out of my mum so now I feel horrible."
