"Who said I was joking."
Monday flew by and before I knew it, Filch was escorting us towards Hagrid's hut. The flicker of Filch's lamp, mixed with the dark sky created an unnerving feeling. For some reason I felt as if something was going to go wrong...
"I bet you'll think twice about breaking a school rule again, won't you, eh?" Filch's voice was scratchy and uneven. "Oh yes... hard work and pain are the best teachers if you ask me... It's a pity they let the old punishments die out... hang you by your wrists from the ceiling for a few days, I've got the chains still in my office, keep 'em well oiled in case they're ever needed... Right, off we go, and don't think of running off, now, it'll be worse if you do."
Sam and I shared a glance while we trailed behind him, heads hanging low. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were slightly in front of us and Draco was on our left. As we walked, I silently wondered what our punishment would be, I mean, it couldn't be that bad... right? After all, it was only Hagrid.
When we reached Hagrid's hut, he, along with Fang emerged from their abnormally large oak doors. A slight wind breezed by us, causing my arms to cover in goosebumps. That's when I realized that Hagrid was sniffling.
"Come on, you're not still on about that dragon, are you?" Filch groaned.
Hagrid sniffled some more. Merlin, this was pathetic. I didn't mean to sound rude, but he did break the law after all... "Dumbledore sent Norbert off to Romania to live in a colony." Norbert was the name of the dragon.
"But that's good, isn't it?" Ron said. "He'll be with his kind."
"Yeh but what if he don' like Romania? What if he don' get along with ther dragons?"
"Oh pull yourself together mate, you gotta keep your wits about you, especially in the forest," Filch said.
Draco looked as if he witnessed a death. "The forest?" He repeated. "We can't go in there at night... there's all sorts of things in there — Werewolves I've heard!"
"That's your problem, isn't it?" Filch said with a wicked smile. "Should've thought about them before you got in trouble." Filch turned around, dragging his feet against the dry ground. "Nighty night," he muttered before chuckling to himself and heading back towards the comfort of Hogwarts.
Hagrid sniffled once more then urged us to follow him into the depths of the dark green forest. Leah and I walked side-by-side for a few minutes until Hagrid came to an abrupt stop. "Right then," He said as he took a step to the right, revealing a puddle of silver liquid. Draco furrowed his brows. "Now ye listen closely, cause it's dangerous what we're about to do tonight, an' I don' want no takin' risks — now look here..."
He pointed towards the silvery liquid spread across the forest floor. "See that stuff shinin' on the ground? That is Unicorn blood, that is. There's a Unicorn in here that's been hurt badly by summat. This is the second time in a week, an' our job is to fin' the poor thing. We might need to put it outa its misery."
"And what if that thing that found the Unicorn finds us first?" Draco asked, unable to keep fear from his voice. Leah and I let out a few small chuckles. I was nervous but not scared.
"Jus' send up green sparks with yer wand if you run into trouble... I'll go with Hermione. Ron and Leah can go together, an' you, Harry, an' Ava can go together."
