"Leah seems exceptionally sad recently,"
Draco's POV
Months passed, and still no sign of a cure. While Blaise and Leah were good friends, no one compared to Ava. It was weird to see life go on. Did no one care that a Potter was petrified? I knew opinions would've been different if it was Harry...One glare to all students in the Slytherin common room, and all chairs were left for my use. It was nice having everyone fear me — for at least I was never bothered. Since I've had excess free time, I'd been drowning myself in studies in order not to stress about Ava.
After Ava, there've been at least three more petrifications. After Granger, teachers began escorting us to classes and creating an even earlier curfew...
I heard McGonagall speaking with Dumbledore... They were saying if petrifications continued, they'd have to close the school, but —
"Yo, Malfoy!"
I snapped from my thoughts and looked up from the coffee table, seeing Blaise impatiently tapping his foot beside me.
"I've been calling your name for, like, a minute now!"
"Oh, sorry," I muttered, turning back to my work. "I guess I was too caught up in Snape's essay."
"Well clearly not caught up enough because you've got nothing written, mate."
"Whatever," I mumbled, slamming my potions book closed.
Leahs POV
Being without your best friend is a lot harder than you'd ever imagine. I knew she wasn't dead, but she could've been! Christmas felt colder than usual, a certain warmth had been stolen from us all. Yet, I'd tried to stay just as cheerful per usual. Thanks to Blaise, I felt less lonely, but truth is — I never had much friends...
Now that it was early spring, I visited Ava in the hospital wing daily. Today I felt particularly sappy.
"We miss you," I said with a sigh, rubbing her thumb. I missed my best friend oh so much. I know I still had Sam, and don't get me wrong, I loved Sam! But it would've been nice to have both...
Just the other day I was talking with Hermione. She'd told me how close she was to finding out what the monster in the chamber was! Yet of course, two days later, on the day of our Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff quidditch match, she and Penelope Clearwater got petrified.
The game was cancelled of course — and now the teachers escorted us everywhere...
"Excuse me, Miss Moonshine. I am speaking to you."
I blinked a few times and realized I was still in my History of Magic class, fiddling with my wand.
"Oh — I apologize Professor," I quickly said, straightening my posture. "I must've zoned out... what was your question?"
"What year was the International convention of wizards held?"
"Er —," I fiddled with my fingers unable to remember the date. "I can't remember sir..."
I heard some slight chuckles behind me and overheard a Slytherin boy say what a pathetic excuse of a Slytherin...
Couldn't people tell I was trying?
Samantha's POV
"My father says he knows what the monster in the chamber is... says it's a type of unidentified creature from another planet. He wrote about it in the Quibbler!"
"I mean, I guess you never know."
I sat on the Ravenclaw couches, my legs spread apart, leaning on my arms. Luna Lovegood was sat beside me rambling about her fathers newspaper and Padma Patil was behind me, straightening my hair as usual.
"Personally Luna," Padma said in a soft voice in order to not seem rude, "I wouldn't put too much faith in your fathers newspaper... I just feel like — some of his information may be misguided."
Luna shrugged, her long blond hair falling beside her shoulders. "Maybe," she said. "But anything's possible! And I'd rather imagine it to be some beautiful creature from far away than a terrifying one..."
"I just can't wait for this year to end — and for those stupid cures to be brewed already. I'm really starting to miss Ava."
Padma sighed as she straightened the last piece of my hair. "I've never been a fan of Slytherins, but Ava and Leah seem kind. I sometimes wonder if they were supposed to be there..."
"Oh, Ava definitely was. I'm not so sure about Leah though. She reminds me more of a Hufflepuff."
"Leah seems exceptionally sad recently," Luna added, looking in my direction.
I sighed, moving my hair off the couch and onto my shoulders. "This is the closest she's ever been to losing her best friend. I know Leah loves me, but I know her absolute best friend is Ava."
"It's already May. Do you think Madame Pomfrey will have the cure soon?"
"I dunno. Let's just hope it'll be ready before the end of the year..."
Harry's POV
"Visiting hours are over Mr. Malfoy. You can't be here."
"I — what?! How is Potter here then!"
"Mister Potter happens to be her brother. You can come back in the morning if you are so inclined. Hours open once more at seven."
"Please, I just wanted to check on her —,"
There was a slam, and Malfoy's words were cut short. I could here the clanking of Madame Pomfrey's heels as she approached Ava's cot.
"Mister Potter, it's getting quite late. How much longer are you wanting to stay?"
I glanced helplessly at my petrified sister and sighed. "Just give me a few more minutes and I'll leave..."
"Oh alright — but just a few! I'll be back soon..." With that, she headed into her office and locked the door behind her.
"Life seems so different without you," I told my sister who said nothing in return. Shocker.
"I'm sorry for not always being the best brother, it's hard having you and my friends by my side... everyone is always telling me something different! How am I supposed to know what to do?"
Silence.
I groaned and stomped my feet against the stone floors, kicking her cot. "Maybe if I told you our plans you wouldn't have gone off by yourself... I'm so sorry Ava..."
I felt some tears escaping from my eyes and let my head drop. A few silent sobs escaped my lips before I decided to call it a night.
Maybe tomorrow would be better...
