"Took you long enough,"
Halloween break ended and soon classes were back in session. Tomorrow we had a Transfiguration quiz, so Leah and I spent all our extra minutes cramming in the library. Heads shoved in books, I begged my mind to pick up every piece of information.
Harry was definitely hiding something from me, and it was quite obvious that Ron and Hermione knew as well. Ron rarely ever talked to me, but Hermione always did. Now, she'd been quite distant and never made eye contact.
Glancing up from my book, I found the clock hanging on the wall and let out a loud groan. "Ava, what is it?" Leah asked, lifting her gaze from her book.
"It's five minutes past one! We're late to our next class!"
She gasped, quickly gathering all of her materials. Leah was a top student and never arrived late to class. Normally I wouldn't care, but seeing as our next class was Potions; an unnamed amount of dread began to arouse within me.
Rushing from the library, we both made our way towards the dungeons with haste.
We ran through the doors panting, while Snape was in the middle of his daily speech. He froze mid-walk and turned towards us, his expression unreadable. "Miss Potter and Miss Moonshine..." His tone was low and monotonous. "What is your petty excuse for arriving late to my class?"
"I'm — sorry — Professor," I breathed out. I tried to catch my breath, clutching my knees for support. These halls really did a number on you... "We were — studying in the library — and lost track of time."
Leah nodded and looked towards the ground. She never liked being the center of attention, but right now the whole class had their eyes on us.
Snape sighed. "As much as it pains me," he started, "I'll have to give you both detention for running late. Speak with me after class..."
Leah and I nodded then headed to find seats. Lucky for us two seats were available. One beside Harry and another beside Draco. Leah knew I was arguing with Harry, and thankfully took the seat beside him.
Snape soon continued on with his lecture. "Today we will be reviewing the Wiggenweld Potion... Can anyone remind me what it's used for?" About a quarter of the class raised their hands, including me and Draco. "Mr. Malfoy?"
Draco smirked. "It's a powerful healing potion that can reverse the effects of sleeping drought sir."
Snape nodded approvingly, then directed his gaze towards me. "And Miss Potter, what are the ingredients for this potion?"
I smiled, proud to be good at a subject. Potions and Transfiguration were by far the best. "They are Honeywater, Sloth brain mucus, chizpurfle fangs, Billywig sting slime, mint leaves, Boom Berry juice, one stewed Mandrake, Salamander blood, 10 Lionfish spines, a Unicorn horn, and Wolfsbane."
I could've sworn I saw the hint of a smile on Snape for a moment, but wasn't quite sure. "Very impressive Miss Potter... Most students can barely list three ingredients... 10 points awarded to Slytherin."
A triumphant smile spread across my face and for the next few minutes, Snape explained the potion; yet I was barely paying attention. "Now to make the potion you need to..." I leaned on my left arm and released a yawn. "Stir the potion until you see..."
His words slowly drifted off as my eyes began to bat shut... until someone decided to tap me. I groaned and turned my head, making eye contact with Draco's stormy grey eyes. He quirked an eyebrow, slightly humored.
He ripped a piece of parchment from his book and began scribbling something on it.
Didn't get your beauty sleep?
I looked up from the note and shook my head. He was right, as I only got two hours of sleep. My mind had been racing about what Ron, Harry, and Hermione may be planning.
Not much, plus I already know how to make this potion.
I passed the parchment back towards Draco, him reading it and looking back at me.
Have to agree, this is quite boring. I'm probably even better than you in Potions though.
I quietly chuckled. He always made everything a competition.
That's highly unlikely. Potions is my top subject.
Well then, I'm surprised you're not failing.
I stared up from the parchment and pretended to be offended, but the sound of students shuffling dragged my attention away. Everyone began rising from their seats and collecting the necessary ingredients. "Right now it is one-thirty; I want these finished by two. Anyone who fails to comply will receive detention."
Draco rose from our table. "I'll get the cauldron while you fetch the ingredients."
I nodded and started towards the shelves lined with ingredients. Finding the Unicorn horn took the longest, but after a minute or so it was located. I quickly headed back towards the table and found that Draco had already set up the cauldron. He looked at me and smirked. "Took you long enough," he stated.
I rolled my eyes. "Took me a while to find the ingredients."
"Well, thanks to you, now we only have forty-five minutes left," he said; still with a smirk. I playfully shoved him then opened our Potions books to the appropriate page.
We began making the potion, and surprisingly, we worked well together. He handed me the ingredients and I threw them into the cauldron.
"Now we need to add five Lionfish spines, then heat it until it turns yellow," he said, flipping through the pages of our textbook. I threw the spines in, turned up the heat, and waited for the potion to turn from red to yellow.
A few minutes later and our potions were almost complete. "Sadly," Snape started, "you cannot fully finish these potions. Once you are completed, clean up your tables and remove the Cauldrons from the fire. Class is officially over... Next class, we will test them."
Everyone began packing up their belongings and preparing to leave class. I however, didn't bother packing my belongings since I had detention along with Sam. "See you at dinner," Draco said. "Since our next classes are different."
I groaned. "Ugh, my next class is History of Magic."
He chuckled. "Well, that class is shit..."
"Really? I had no idea," I said; my voice overflowing with sarcasm.
Draco joined Blaise at the door, heading to their next class, while Leah and I stayed behind; awaiting detention.
Later that evening, Leah and I returned to our Potions class for detention, having been ordered to give the class a deep cleaning. "And remember," Snape started, "you will use no magic. Muggle styled cleaning with brooms and cloth. If you fail to comply, you will face severe punishment." With that Snape turned around, his cloak flowing behind him as he stormed from the classroom; slamming the doors.
Leah and I looked towards each other, sighed, and got to work, for it was about to be a long few hours...
