"You will one day, sweet child..."
Ava's POV
Harry and I walked through the last door and came face to face with Professor Quirrell, who was muttering into an ancient mirror. I knew it. I knew it was him!"It was you..." Harry said loud enough for Quirrel to hear.
"Ah," Quirrell spoke quietly without a stutter. "Mister and Miss Potter, I wondered when I'd see you here... especially you Miss Potter."
I didn't know what to say, but to my luck Harry kept talking. He was still holding onto my hand tightly.
"What do you mean?"
"Miss Potter didn't tell you? Well I've been meeting with her in her dreams... she finally found out who I was and ran to tell her friends. How pathetic." Quirrell laughed, and it wasn't his usual quivering tremble, neither, but cold and sharp.
I glared at him and let go of Harry's hand to approach him closer. "You!" I yelled. "You were trying to turn me against my brother! You wanted me to join you!"
Quirrell laughed again. "Of course it was me. I need you on my side...on his side...you are way too strong. Your brother on the other hand is — disposable."
"How dare you," I seethed. "I will never join you! How dare you think I would betray my brother... my family!"
"You will one day, sweet child..."
"You tried to kill us." Harry said. He sounded shocked.
"Of course," Quirrell replied. "Even with Snape muttering his counter curse, I would have succeeded, but your little friend Granger accidentally knocked me over as she went to set Snape's cloak on fire."
Harry and I gasped. "Snape was trying to save us?" We asked in unison.
"Of course. Now both of you stay there while I examine this mirror."
That was when I realized which mirror it was. It was the Mirror of Erised.
"This mirror is the key to finding the Stone," Quirrell murmured, tapping his way around the frame. "Trust Dumbledore to come up with something like this... but he's in London... I'll be far away by the time he gets back...." Quirrell came back out from behind the mirror and stared hungrily into it. "I see the Stone... I'm presenting it to my master... but where is it?"
"We heard you sobbing a few days ago —" Harry blurted out. "I thought it was Snape threatening you."
For the first time, I saw a flicker of fear in Quirrell's eyes. "Sometimes," he started. "I find it hard to follow my master's instructions... He is a great wizard, and I am weak."
"You mean to say he was in the bathroom with you?" I knew what was going on, but refused to say out loud.
"Yes he was...in fact he is always with me, wherever I go...I met him when I traveled around the world. A foolish young man I was then, full of ridiculous ideas about good and evil. Lord Voldemort showed me how wrong I was. There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it.... Since then, I have served him faithfully, although I have let him down many times. He has had to be very hard on me."
Quirrell shivered suddenly. "He does not forgive mistakes easily. When I failed to steal the stone from Gringotts, he was most displeased. He punished me... decided he would have to keep a closer watch on me...."
Quirrell cursed under his breath. "I don't understand... is the Stone inside the mirror? Should I break it?"
My mind was racing with ideas of how to get the stone before Quirrell did. Then I remembered that I could talk to Harry through my mind.
Harry, do you have any ideas?
Yeah... that's the Mirror of Erised! It shows us what we want most, so if we want the stone, it might show us where it's hidden!
That's brilliant!
That was a brilliant idea. But before I could act on it, Quirrell started to speak again.
"What does this mirror do? How does this work? Master, please help me!"
To my shock, a voice answered. It was cold and sent shivers down my spine. "Use the girl...use the girl..."
Quirrell turned to face me. "Yes... female Potter, come here!" He practically screamed. "Look in the mirror and tell me what you see."
I looked up at Harry and he nodded. I slowly approached the mirror to look inside. I knew I had to lie so, I thought hard. Staring into the ancient, ornate frame, I slowly saw an image appear onto the mirror. It was me. I was holding the stone! But then the me in the mirror threw it to Harry and he shoved it into his pocket. With a smile and wink from mirror Harry, the image faded once more.
Harry it is in your pocket.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Harry pat his pocket. I knew it was in there, just didn't know how it got there. I mean, that was Dumbledore for you...
"Well girl? What do you see?"
"I see myself getting A's in all classes, and I'm Quidditch captain!" I lied.
"She lies," it was the voice again and I froze.
"You lie! Tell me where it is!" Quirrell shouted. I slowly backed away to where Harry was.
"Let me speak to them face to face," the voice drawled. I knew it... I knew it! I swear to Merlin —
"But Master you're not strong enough," Quirrell answered. My face paled, and I mentally prepared myself for a visually scaring sight I would soon face.
"I am strong enough for this..." Quirrell nodded and he reached up and started unraveling his turban. Layer by layer, Quirrell unwrapped the dusty purple turban from around his head, and with each layer, facial expressions became more visible. Once it was fully unwrapped, Quirrell turned around and what I saw next was truly terrifying. On the back of Quirrell's head where there should be skin, there was another face. This face was a palish green, with slits for a nose and red eyes like a snake. The skin of the monster was perfectly blended into Quirrell's, making it impossible to tell where it started or finished. My breath hitched and for a moment I forgot how to properly breath.
"Harry and Ava Potter," The voice said, drawling out each word.
"See what I have become?" the face said. "Mere shadow and vapor ... I have form only when I can share another's body... but there have always been those willing to let me into their hearts and minds.... Unicorn blood has strengthened me these past weeks... you saw faithful Quirrell drinking it for me in the forest... and once I have the Elixir of Life, I will be able to create a body of my own.... Now... why don't you give me that Stone in your pocket?"
He knew. He knew it was in Harry's pocket.
Uh oh...
Harry and I Began to stumble backwards. No way in hell were we giving up that easily...
"Harry," the voice spoke again. "If you give me the stone, we can bring your parents back from the dead! You can work by my side with your dear sister —"
"NEVER!" Harry shouted.
"Seize the girl!" The voice shouted.
Quirrell took out his wand and before I could even comprehend what was happening, he yelled a spell in my direction. "Stupify!" He shouted. I went to move out of the way but it was too late. The second the spell hit me, everything went black.
