"Oh, piss off!"

"Basilisk,"

The portrait of Salazar Slytherin swung open, revealing the Slytherin common room. I darted through the common room and towards the girls' dormitories before Draco had any time to question.

Entering my dorm, I was relieved to see an empty room. Even Mavis wasn't in her cage. Quickly U began searching for a box — any box would do, as long as I could safely place this wretched ring inside.

I checked our wooden makeshift bookshelves, under our beds, and between every crack and crevice. Eventually I was able to find a small box in one of our desk drawers. The box was crafted of a light color wood and had a slide-on lid.

I placed the box on my bed and carefully slid my ring off, placing it in its new home. The feeling of removing the ring was quite unexpected, as it felt as if a part of me would be forever lost. I shuddered a bit at the feeling but shook it off.

I slid the lid back on the box, grabbed an ink bottle off of my desk, picked up an emerald green feathered quill and dipped it into the ink. Making clear and gentle strokes across the wooden box, I wrote my name so everyone knew not to open it.

I pushed the small box under my bed and let out a sigh of relief. The next step on my agenda was to check out a few books from the library. My plan was simple: uncover what type of magic had bewitched this ring.

I exited my dorm and went to leave the common room but stopped at the sound of someone calling my name.

"Ava, where are you going?" Draco inquired with one eyebrow raised.

"Just heading for the Library," I said with a small shrug, attempting to seem nonchalant.

"What are you looking for?"

I thought for a moment, weighing all my possible answers. "It would actually help if you came along — I need some help."

I looked up towards Draco to find him already wearing his ever-so-famous smirk as he agreed to join me.

"I knew you'd ask me for help one day. I'm pretty bored anyways."

Draco's POV

Ava had been acting mysterious all day, and it had begun to peak my interest. Well, everything she does interests me. She's always — well, so — mysterious...

But today especially.

The way she'd been carrying herself, and how her hair had been pinned up despite her always having it down.

"What are you looking for?" I asked, hoping she'd invite me along.

"It would actually help if you came along — I need some help." She looked towards me with raised eyebrows, as if begging me to join her.

I felt a slight heat rush into my cheeks but quickly shook it off. I smirked.

"I knew you'd ask me for help one day. I'm pretty bored anyways."

She's seemed on edge lately, and I wanted to know why. This was the perfect opportunity to find out what's been going on with her.
