Running Away

"Don't touch my sister,"

Safe to say that my summer didn't turn out quite as expected. The Dursleys were absolutely horrid. They made us prepare their meals, clean their home, now their lawn, and I even had to clean Dudley's room! And trust me — you don't want to clean his room.

"I can't believe you! You almost used magic, and this is the fifth time you've done this!"

"In my Defense, this is the first time I actually hurt him."

I had just kneed Dudley in the balls after he made a particularly snarky comment about our mother.

"That makes it worse!" Harry threw his hands into the air. "Why are you in such a pissy mood?"

I scoffed. "Why am I in a pissy mood? Maybe it's because today is our birthday but our friends haven't owl'd us once, all summer!"

Harry sighed and took a seat beside me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "Yeah, I know... I thought we were all friends..."

"Well, apparently not. Since we have to do everything ourselves, I'll just let Mavy out of her cage and owl them myself." I went to stand up, but Harry pulled me back down; a solemn expression laced upon his face.

"You know we can't do that, right?" He said, lowering his gaze.

"You follow the rules too much."

"Maybe, but in my opinion; I don't feel like sleeping outside again."

I couldn't disagree, so with another huff, I plopped back onto my bed. "I guess you're right, I just really want to message them... especially on my birthday."

To my bemusement, Harry scowled. "Just please stay away from Malfoy," he said. "He's bad news."

Harry and Draco were so similar, but for some pathetic reason they hated one another so much!
"He's not that bad, but you're just too wrapped up in hating him to notice. The same goes for him. You both hate each other, yet I've never met two humans that are more alike!"

Harry shook his head. "No, Ava. The Malfoy's are bad news just like the Rose's. They were right in Voldemort's inner circle!"

"Listen; it's the end of our birthday and I don't feel like arguing. Now please get off of my bed so I can go to sleep, okay?"

Harry reluctantly hopped off my bed and clambered into his own. I climbed under my sheets and rolled over, hoping that I'd be able to get a good night's rest. Before I could fully fall asleep, I whispered one more thing, "Happy birthday, Harry."

-

After many gruesome weeks of being the Dursley's slaves, it was finally the last week of summer. Before I came here, I dreamed of having a normal summer for once.

I imagined myself sitting on the lawn counting the clouds, all while reading my friends' letters with wide smiles. In a perfect world, I'd send Polaroids of me and Harry running in the grass, or reading new books about the wizarding world... But Merlin knows that'll never be the case. Merlin knows we're Potters. Merlin knows we'll never be able to be normal...

I could already sense a foul day approaching since our two owls wouldn't stop creating a ruckus.

"Mavy, Hedwig, shut up!" I whisper-yelled as I rolled out of bed one morning.

"You're going to get us in trouble!" Harry added, but to no avail. Suddenly, our uncle's booming voice was heard through their screeches.

"You two, get down here this instant!" He yelled.

Harry and I shared a look of defeat. "Great, now you've both done it," he muttered. We took our sweet time leaving our room. For any second spared from our uncle was a second of my life to be worshiped.

"This is the third time in one week! If you can't get those bloody birds of yours to shut up, they'll have to go."

"They're bored!" Harry defended.,

"Plus, it's your fault that they're angry," I added. "You haven't allowed them to leave their cages all summer!"

Uncle Vernon's face swelled with anger, but I could care less. I never cared to upset them, for he treated us like dirt. He took a hold of my shirt, and dragged me to match the level of his abnormal obese head. My expression stayed blank. I didn't want him to know how I was actually feeling.

"Don't you ever talk to me like that again, you insolent little girl!" He spat. I could see the anger bubbling in his shit-brown eyes.

When he let go of me, I straightened out my sweatshirt and smirked. "Your threats don't scare me," I said. "You're just jealous."

Harry gave me a look as if telling me to shut up, but I didn't listen. "You and your family treat us like shit, yet you expect me to respect you?" I scoffed. This man really had the audacity to demand respect when he quite literally made us sleep outside.

Before I could register what was happening, my cheek was burning and I could feel a bruise developing. My own uncle had just slapped me. Yet, it was quite pathetic. For such a big man, he has barely any muscle.

Harry gasped. "Don't touch my sister," He said through gritted teeth.

I just laughed and pulled out my wand, pointing it at our uncle's chest. "Oh, you're in for it now." A smirk was still etched onto my face, while my red hair dangled freely.

"Ava —"

"Harry, don't," I interrupted. I was at my limit, for my patience had just run out. Aunt Petunia had heard all of the commotion and ran into the living room. When she saw my wand pointed at her 'beloved husband,' she let loose an ear-splitting shriek.

I turned my attention towards the latter. "Now, if you don't move out of the way, I won't hesitate to hex you."

Vernon and Petunia cowardly hopped out of the way and ran into the kitchen, shouting a spew of curse words my way while they did. I quickly ran back upstairs and into our room, soon followed by Harry.

Grabbing all of my belongings including Mavis, I threw on a pair of black sneakers that I'd bought with Uncle Vernon's credit card and tied my hair into a high ponytail.

"What are you doing?" Harry asked.

"Leaving," I said. "And you're coming with me, so I guess you should begin packing."

"But where are we going to stay?" He asked as he threw his belongings into his Hogwarts suitcase.

I shrugged. "Since the Dursley's won't have any control over us, we could owl one of our friends. Maybe Leah..."

Harry seemed nervous and I quickly understood why. "That's if she even wants to talk to us..."

"There has to be a reason for her silence," I said; not wanting to believe that my best friend would just drop me.

"I guess you're right — are you ready?"

"Yeah, I am. Now come on, I don't want to be here any longer than we have to." I grabbed my suitcase with my left hand, and Mavy's cage with my right. Exiting our room, we headed downstairs and straight for the door.

"Where do you think you're going?" Uncle Vernon said as we headed for the exit.

"We're leaving," I said. "And don't plan on returning."
