Hogwarts, Scotland, 1977
September 3rd, Autumn winds

I spent the entire first day of my classes ignoring my sister and her friends.

I stood alone during potions, sat alone during transfiguration, charms, defence against dark arts, and muggle studies.

I was feeling so pathetically lonely that it was worth laughing at. To think I'd hoped Ella would be here for me in Hogwarts. To think grandfather wanted me here because Ella would be there to protect me.

I'd written back to him and had gone to owlery yesterday, telling him I was fine and I missed him just as much. I was surprised to find out how much I meant it.

But I was not weak. I was anything but weak. My mother had tried to kill me, I had seen her burn in front of my eyes. I did not know who my father was. I had spent nearly my entire life raising myself alone and I was a tough, strong girl who would not break simply because her sister has a life and she doesn't.

For the first time, I realised why Sorting Hat had put me into Gryffindor.

But alas, there was one person whom I could not ignore for long. Whom I did not even want to ignore for long.

"Can I sit beside you?"

I turned to look at Remus and a soft smile made its way onto my face. His had a similar one. "You don't need to ask, Remus."

"Of course I do. I thought you were mad at me." He seated himself next to me in Charms and I felt a tad more gleeful than I had before.

"I wasn't mad at you." I frowned. "Why would I be? I'm mad at Black and Potter and that - Snape."

"Yes, I know." Remus snorted. "Everyone stays mad at Snape."

"He's your nemesis or something?"

"Sort of. Sirius, James and Snape fought the moment they saw one another during their first year. They've been trying to get back at each other every moment since. James and Sirius prank him and Snape tries to tattletale them off."

"I don't think it's working out for Snape." I chortle.

"It's really not." Remus agrees as Flitwick drones out something about bubblehead charm. "But sometimes I get angry at James and Sirius. Perhaps if they let it go, he'd back off, too."

"They're too prideful," I note.

"They are. And believe me, it has gotten them into some very bad situations."

I didn't know what situations Remus was talking about but it was obvious it was something regarding himself. They'd done something to him, too, I realised. Perhaps something like my letter - or something much, much worse. Black was very unpredictable.

And James Potter was nothing but trouble.

"Do you have secrets, Remus?"

Remus drops his quill and turns to face me with wide eyes, "What?"
