Hogwarts, Scotland Highlands, 1978
February 14th, light snowfall

It's both magical and depressing when I wake up on Valentine's.

The fact that I'm in Hogwarts when it's this day is enlightening but the fact that I also, indeed alone, is pitying.

Carriages for Hogsmeade leave after breakfast which I am very reluctant to attend. Watching couples coo at each other might make me puke in my cereal.

"COME ON, Elena!" Marlene whines. "I promise I'd let you borrow my secret stash of firewhiskey."

I look up at her with a jolt and groan, "You bought me."

She grins and loops her arm around me, "To be fair, I never liked your sister."

I smile, "You and Dorcas were the only ones."

She clicks her tongue, "Look, honey, Ella is gorgeous. Let's face it. So are you but so is she. And when a gorgeous woman strolls in Hogwarts, there is always utter attention given to them in the best and worst ways."

"I know," I say, my eyes firm.

"Ella was liked by Sirius because he was attracted to her, she was liked by James be— no, James just likes everyone. Peter was trying to go along with things. Remus and she were the only ones who had more than it. Remus liked hanging out with her and they were friends. I always knew that Ella felt attracted to Remus but . . . turns out, I failed to warn you. And for that, I am deeply sorry."

I pause in my tracks and stand in front of her, "You never apologise to me, McKinnon. You are truly the only one here I'd take a bullet for. Also Dorcas. You both have been here since the start."

She smiles but it hitches, "What's a bullet?"

I laugh, tangling our arms again. "Okay, let's say, I'll take a curse for you."

I think her eyes water for a moment before she leans down and kisses my forehead. "Love you, Lena."

"Love you, Lene."

She laughs as we enter the great hall for breakfast and leaves my side. "I'll go sit with Dorcas, but you are more than welcome to join us."

"I know," I tell her. "but you two enjoy your day. I think I'll go sit with the marauders."

She frowns when she hears 'marauders' instead of 'all marauders but Moony', however, inclines her head and leaves.

When I get there, Lily is already waving from James' side. They are both wearing dark green coloured clothes and look adorable together.

I grin and blow her a kiss before taking a seat beside Remus. The lot pauses whatever they're doing, looks up briefly and goes back to talking. This time in hushed tones.

I roll my eyes at how obvious they are but don't say anything. "Morning Mary, Pete, Alice, Remus."

Remus turns to me and smiles softly, "Good morning, Elena. Sleep well?"
