"Queen's Gambit," My grandfather hums. "You can't beat me with the same move twice, dove."

I frown when he supports his centre, playing c7-c6. I move my pawn again, two squares, d4. He moves his two squares and I move my c pawn two squares. He chuckles and moves his own c-pawn one square.

I groan. He's making his moves to capture on c4. "You're using the Slav Defence!"

"I could use the Queen's Gambit decline," he tells me. "but I liked the idea of you losing in a worse way."

He laughs when I glower at him. "Chess is winning and losing, the world's a board."

"You're obsessed," I declare and get up but he starts to arrange the pieces again. "I'm not losing again, this was my thirteenth game."

"Let's play speed chess." He shrugs and I sigh, I can't win from him.

I'm not that good at Blitz but he loves every kind of chess there has ever existed. He takes Black as usual and I make my first move, Glek variation, e4.

He follows and moves his pawn. I move my knight and he moves his knight, too. I move another pawn and he continues with his other knight. His knight takes my pawn and mine takes his.

I take my bishop to g2 and his pawn takes me Queen's knight. He has my King in check in five moves with his bishop to b5.

I can block the mate by moving my bishop in to protect the King but it would be for nothing, he'd just take the bishop with his own and then proceed to kill me.

I nod and push my king down. "You win, again."

"Don't lose hope," He laughs.

"Look at you," I make a face. "All smug and happy."

He shrugs and gets up from his chair, rounding the desk with a cigar in his mouth. "Before I tell you, you have to promise not to get too excited and run to your room right away."

My eyes widen, "What are you hiding?"

He chuckles and removes the cigar, blowing a puff of smoke, "You got a letter from, what was it - yes, Potter manor."

"Potter manor," I repeat with a huge smile on my face.

"Yes," He shakes his head, "They invited you over tonight for a New Year's ball."

"A BALL?"

"Elena, you've been to a hundred before."

"Yes, but — is Remus going to be there?" I ask in a hurry.
