The whole day you were waiting for V to come home. He promised you and the kids that he'll be home soon but you guessed that day wasn't today.
He moved out of the orphanage when he was accepted to become a trainee in an entertainment company. V always dreamed of being a singer, if not, an actor. You remember his words when he took his bags and left the orphanage where the two of you grew up.
"I'll rise like a star in the sky. Wait for me until then, _______."
The first meeting with V was a sad one. He had no parents just like everybody else who were taken in by the nuns. Either the parents died or couldn't support their childrenbut V's case was different. He doesn't remember where he came from, even his name. Everyone was just surprised to hear him speak one day,
"My name is V!"
You called him three to four times a week and you would ask him what he's doing. Always, almost automatically, he would say that he's working. You can hear the exhaustion from his voice sometimes and it makes you sad. You want to see him.
Today, you called him and asked him what he's doing,
"Working."
You held onto the phone, it was all you could do to soothe your aching heart. "Are you doing well? Don't get sick. Eat well and give yourself time to rest."
He hummed in reply.
The kids always asked about him. They look up at you whenever you talk with V on the phone. They missed him too. You took a picture of them, arranging them neatly by their height, like a class picture you made them sit properly at the orphanage's front stairs. They wore their radiant smiles and their best clothes because you told them you'll come to live with V and show him the picture.
"Have a safe trip and take care of V." The nuns, who were practically your second mothers, bid you farewell.
"Unnie, will you give this to V oppa?" Mary drew a family picture and you took it from her small hands, "Tell him to visit soon."
"I will." You smiled sweetly at her and kissed the top of her head.
The city didn't disappoint you. It was enormous and spectacular like how V described it to be. But you noticed what the people in the city lacked, they all wore corporate attires and they seemed to live on the high end with their gadgets and their fashion. You observed that people in the city barely smiled or greeted each other. They were either talking on the phone or playing with their smartphones.
"___________!" V jumped out from a black van, wearing the stupid smile you missed so much.
You stood up from the apartment and immediately, ran to him, giving him the tightest hug.
"Uh, ________, this is embarrassing.." he held your shoulders lightly.
"I was very worried!" You couldn't control your emotions and so you cried, "You didn't show yourself to us for 3 years!"
He didn't speak and just patted your head as he allowed you to cling onto him for a few more seconds.
You finally snapped back to reality when his groupmates passed by, giving V teasing looks as they entered the building. You almost forgot that he was living with six other guys and you are about to live with them. V helped you take your luggage up to their dorm.
"This is your room. Mine's just across yours so you can just come over if you want to tell me something." V said, you just noticed this but he seemed to have lost a lot of weight. His chubby cheeks were gone and were replaced by sharp, handsome features. "So.. I'll leave you to fix your room. Just call me if you need anything."
The night came quickly so you soon felt tired. It was a long day and you had a lot to process, including the other boys' names and the house rules you have to follow. You thought the guys all retired to their beds but then the knock on your door came, it opened slightly, revealing V in his pajamas.
"_________, you asleep?" He whispered in he dark.
"I was about to!" You replied and you heard his low chuckle.
"I have work tomorrow so we'll head out really early. You'll probably not see me in the morning." V continued to whisper, "That's all I came to say. Goodnight! Sleep well."
You barely see anybody at home. That went on for the whole week. In the morning, they would all take their showers and dress quickly to attend to their schedules. You only get to say goodbye to V before he goes back to work. The guys would come back late in the evening, by that time, you were already asleep and would only hear the soft rustle they made as they also prepare for bed.
"V oppa is at work right now." You tell the kids over the phone, "Yes, he's doing fine. Really? You saw him on TV today? He's very handsome right?"
The kids were so happy when you called, you could see their smiles in your head. You stood in front of V's vacant room, hesitating if you should come in or not..
The doorknob didn't make a sound as you turn it. You peeked inside the room, immediately recognizing which bed V was using. He never did learn how to make his bed after he wakes up so you took the liberty of doing it for him, like how it used be when you were young. You smoothed out every wrinkle on his bed then laid on his bed for awhile. His pillow smells just like him, you wished you could spend a day with him, just one day where he wasn't so eager to work and earn money for the orphanage.
You closed your eyes hugging his pillow to your body. You felt his sheets against your palm as you fall asleep on his scent.
~
"Good morning __________." You woke up on V's arms, his face close to yours. You were tucked under his warm blanket, your feet tangled together with V's.
You smiled when he brushed the strand of hair covering your face, "Are you not going to ask why I slept here?"
"Let me guess.. you made my bed and fell asleep afterwards?" He chuckled, "Were you lonely without me?"
You pouted as you nodded. "I couldn't sleep the first three nights after you left."
"Sorry." He kissed your forehead. "I'm never leaving you again. I promise."
"V?"
He watched your face, your face that he didn't see for three years, "Yeah?"
"Come home." You looked into his eyes, pleading.
"It's not that easy, ________." He replied, "You know why I need to stay here."
"Stop working. The orphanage has enough funds now. You don't have to-" V pressed his finger on your lips.
"I want to earn more money for you." He brushed his finger across your lips, feeling its softness that tells him you're really in his arms, "I want to take you out from the orphanage and ask you to be my family."
V took your hand and filled in the gaps between your fingers with his own, "I want to buy you a house with the money I'm saving up. The house you've always wanted, one you told me when we were kids. Still remember that?"
"The house with a garden and a cute little chimney?" You looked up at his face.
"Yeah, that one." V smiled, "Then we'll have three kids and if we do well, maybe we can try for five?" He wiggled his eyebrows and you giggled. "I want to live happily with you, __________. I wanna make lots and lots of memories together with you."
