"Eomma?!" Jeonghun exclaimed, his gaze fixed on his mother seated across the table.
"What!" she replied tersely, not bothering to meet his eyes as she concentrated on slicing the meat before her.
"Appa called and said he's back from America. I want to see him!" Jeonghun insisted. Goeun paused, her knife halting mid-air as she processed his words. A scoff escaped her lips, and she slowly turned her head to face him, disbelief etched on her features.
"So he's finally back... I can't help but wonder why he keeps going to America. Doesn't it seem odd to you, Jeonghun? Your Appa traveling so often and not being able to spend quality time with you and your sister here in Korea?" she questioned, her voice laced with concern. Jeonghun's gaze dropped to his plate as he absorbed her words, the sadness in his eyes becoming all the more apparent.
"I asked you a question, Jeonghun! Now respond!" she raised her voice, cutting through the silence. He glanced up at her, his expression shifting to a frown.
"Appa said he has a lot of work over there... and he also mentioned he has a surprise for us," Jeonghun replied, his big innocent eyes shining with hope as he looked at Goeun.
"Ha... ha... a lot of work, huh? Jeonghun-ah, I'm quite certain your Appa has another family over there and doesn't care about you or your sister! Your Appa doesn't love us anymore!" she exclaimed, her voice rising with anger.
A heart-wrenching wail erupted from the other end of the table. Seoyeon was sobbing uncontrollably, her little face streaked with tears as she processed the cruel words about her father's love.
"APPA!! Appa!!..." she cried out, her eyes brimming with tears. Goeun let out a frustrated sigh, slamming her fork onto her plate with a loud clatter.
"STOP CRYING, SEOYEON!! WHY ARE YOU WAILING AT THIS HOUR? I TOLD YOU TO HAVE MANNERS AT THE TABLE!" Goeun shouted at her daughter. She swiftly rose from her chair and marched over to Seoyeon. The little girl cried even harder, her sniffling growing more pronounced as she watched her mother's fury unfold. The chaotic sounds of wailing and shouting reverberated through the house, causing Jeonghun to cover his ears in distress.
His eyes welled up with tears as he took in the painful scene before him. Squeezing his eyes shut, a tear slipped down his cheek.
"Appa! Appa... I miss you!" he thought, the quiet sobs escaping his lips as he sat at the table, feeling the weight of his heartache.
